Boot time delays - A start job is running for ...

I have installed 13.2, and chose to install the whole gnome 3 desktop. I’ve noticed at boot time there are messages appearing saying for example “A start job is running for X display manager” and “a start job is running for SuSe firewall” etc. These messages cycle around on the same line. They appear even though I am not using gnome, but instead use xdm and icewm.

I installed 13.2 onto a USB stick and selected minimal x-window system, and these messages do not appear. What are these messages about? Are they related to gnome?

Good.

Jobs starting.

Nope.

What is your problem? Does the system start? If it does, what the
problem, then? If not, describe the problem.

You need to understand a Desktop is just a set of programs that run on top of the actual operating system. So you are seeing the Linux system starting up. Has nothing to do with Gnome.

The problem is described in the subject line “boot time delays”. These are long delays, and they are not present in other installations I have done. I understand what gnome is, I wondered if there is a connection with gnome because on the installation where I did not include gnome these delays do not occur.

It looks like this problem has been around for a while, and according to one responder, it DOES relate to gnome.
