Yes I am still seeking help. This whole thread is about problems with GRUB which are preventing me from booting either opensuse or windows. The goal of this thread is for me to be able to remove opensuse and boot windows normally.
CAF (and others): I got up to burning the ISO image to CD for the vista recovery, and it had an error! Something about an input/output error. I know my disc drive has been playing up recently. How annoying.
I think what I’ll do is I’ve got a computer-nut friend who may know some people that can do this for me. I’ll probably have to pay them as they’re professionals, but I just want this done. I’ll probably call this guy very soon, but I’ll keep you updated.

simple: just restore from the full system backup you took before
installing Linux…
piece of cake.

ask in a Windows forum how to solve that…

If you haven’t done anythihg to the lost sdb you can try to recover the partition tables . The idea is to restore the primary master boot record from the secondary/backup master boot record on SDB.
I prefer you look for and review the free partition recovery utilities like “Partition Table Doctor” (for Windows Recovering a Deleted Partition Table) to make sure #1 they support ext3 (hopefully ext3 support also fixes ext4 partitions) and #2 its a fairly current utitility.
I dare say you now have sour grapes for Linux, but in actuality your issue here is really easy to solve (If you know what you are doing). Not much comfort, sorry.
You already removed Linux by wiping sdb. Now you just have to remove grub from sda and possibly repair BOOTMGR in Vista.
In the absence of a good optical burner, you might want to seek out help or get a new drive.
I can tell you, even though it might be far from your mind, if you re-install Linux to sdb and grub again to sda, theoretically you should be able to boot both. But I’m not sure you are up to it. No offence implied.

I agree, If what you want is windows, just set it as default in the boot loader during or after install. This is looking like the easiest way for you, Linux will also be there when windows dies, this is a bootloader problem only, no big deal!
Ok, well about a week ago (I’ve been busy since that’s why I haven’t been here since) I re-installed openSUSE on sdb. Now it’s the same as before - GRUB loads fine and I just choose “windows” over openSUSE when booting. So all is good and no data is lost. I would have prefered not to have openSUSE at all, but perhaps having it as insurance isn’t such a bad thing. But as far as I can see that’s al it’ll be there for.
So I’m feeling happy cause the problem’s fixed. I want to thank all of you for trying to help me and putting up with my n00b-ishness in this area (I’m much better with windows). I wish you all well with your openSUSE-ing.
