On booting I get as far as the screen with the four icons that reveal themselves as the boot sequence progresses. After the first two are revealed, (the HDD and the crossed tools), everything hangs. If I reboot and choose the recovery option from the initial menu, I can boot sucessfully (if not very very slowly), into the desktop. Mouse movement and screen changes are very sluggish. Please help!

your problem sounds as if perhaps you have bad install media:
-did you get your install media from http://software.opensuse.org/
-did you check the iso with md5 or sha1 to see if the download was
fine, as described in http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Download_help
-did you boot from the prepared install media and use its
built-in-self-test by selecting “Check Installation Media” as you see
here http://tinyurl.com/makp4pm
if you did all of those things, then tell us about your hardware,
especially your graphics/video…
I have been running 12.3 successfully since last March, and previous versions for over a year. I have always found it supremely stable. This is the first time that this has happened, which is why I’m a bit surprised!.
Dell Vostro. Intel DualCore, Nvidia GForce 8300 GS,
That’s not the boot sequence, that’s the KDE splash screen. How long did you wait for the desktop to appear?
The cause of this all might very well be in the NVIDIA card. Boot in the mentioned failsafe mode, use Yast - Software repositories - Add - Community repos to add the NVIDIA repo. After finishing and trusting the key, start the software manager. The NVIDIA drivers should be auto-selected for install. Perform the install, reboot and report if things have improved.
Followed the procedure as you have explained. The following are installed:
xorg-x11-driver-video-nouveau
xf86-video-nv
xorg-x11-server
Still unable to boot unless I specify 3.7.10-1.11 default recovery mode
Where else might I look?
do older kernels from boot menu work?
nouveau is the open source NVIDA driver please try the proprietary driver should have NVIDIA in the package names.
Gone through all nVidia drivers with the same result.
I am going to reinstall the system. This will be a quicker solution.
Thanks for the help.
