Boot problem please help

installed today and… I installed today and the install went ok but when i tried to load into opensuse all i see is a mostly black screen and then looks liek distorted stuff on the bottom 1/4 of my monitor i can see a cursor but that’s all… oh i have a ati radeon HD4650 that worked fine in Ubuntu…

There are problems with ATI and newer kernels. See if it will boot into safe mode.

I tried that help file ic ant even get it to boot into text mode… i notice when i load opensuse before i see the weird screen stuff it show errors on the part where it says done a bunch… i had this working earlier about a week ago and only thing i did was upgrade my video card reinstall opensuse and now i have problems… it dosent make sense to me… so i guess what am i doing wrong about getting into run level 3 it says press 3 at the grub menu and it will appear in the box below i do that but still boots into a graphical messed up interface…

Another way to get to a text console is to boot up as normal, then when the graphical login screen is presented (even with corrupted graphics), press CTRL-ALT-F2. You should now have a text console, with login prompt. Login as root, then type ‘init 3’ to kill the X-server. From there you should be able to try the guide’s advice.

still cant figure this out i reinstalled like 12 times still cannot get into anytype of text mode maybe 11.3 will work better?.. i really wanted to give opensuse a try might half to wait 18 more days…

Hi,

At the grub menu (where you can select what to boot into) press one of
the direction keys to stop the countdown and type 3 and press [enter].
This should get you to run level 3, then you can try ‘su -’; enter your
root password; then ‘sax2 -r -m 0=vesa’. This should allow you to use
the graphic mode; albeit a much worse quality one.

Regard,
Barry.

P.S. From my experience of 11.3 RC, the problem should be solved in 11.3.
