my system stopped booting after recent update.
When I select desktop it goes to splash screen an dies.
Have to hit reset key.
If I select nomodeset it boots fine excepts graphic resolution
is 1280x1024 instead of 1680x1050.
System is sandy bridge, Asus P8H67-M EVO, Intel Graphics enabled
no other grapics cards, Suse 11.4 64 bit
I do my updates with zypper up.
Let me know what other info you may need.

So I have a similar setup and I did try to use the built in graphics. It worked, but would choke on any 32 bit openGL graphics. I could just never get as good a setup as I had when using a separate nVIDIA video card. In the end, I just purchased a EVGA 550 TI nVIDIA video card for $140 that worked with everything. I think that given enough time, the Sandy Bridge graphics will start working well with Linux, but it is kind of new right now. Just a few months ago, all of the motherboard chipsets were recalled that supported Sandy Bridge. I am using the MSI H67MA-E45 motherboard which is now B3 step rated, but I had to send my old one back for replacement. The i7-2600K CPU is great, but only slightly faster than an i7 870 which uses the same kind of memory setup and costs $25 less. The new CPU is priced well for its speed, it works great with Linux and Windows and the new graphics do not suck, but you will find less frustration with a nVIDIA video card if you can afford one right now.
reason I bought this was that Intel graphics supposed to be very good in video editing.
But I was thinking Nvidia 420 in case I need something better and ps is 650W and can
handle extra load. This Asus mb has new chipsets.
But the problem is that it works fine after initial installation.
There were some kernel updates included in updates maybe Intel i915 driver was messed up?
I do not have windows installed
Hello, my name is Antonio I am Italian, I’m new to the forum which is using opensuse, so I immediately issue a fresh cool for you, I hope it is not disturbing …
I do not work sudo apt-get install command not found answer me, why?
but I did not find any info for fixing my system. Maybe I just reinstall and backup system
before any updates. Debian site article about KMS seems to cause similar problems.
zypper up next and I will look into compiling new kernel
You might want to add the following repository and update Mesa and Xorg from it for openSUSE 11.4:
Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.4
I found a couple of intereseting articles on the subject here:
[Phoronix] Low-End Sandy Bridge Linux Graphics Performance
and here:
[Phoronix] Intel Is Readying The xf86-video-intel 2.15 Driver
Thank You,
Thanks,
interesting article,
Now I think the problem is KMS related, it boots but monitor has no backlight.
Going to read discussion on the Phoronix article, maybe I compile kenel same way he does.
I will try updated xorg files after download finishes.

Do you have a live CD of 11.4?
To see what is gives you from a live session, or do you remember what driver it had initially? Probably the same as mine?
If it worked initially, it should still work. Why it doesn’t…I’m not sure
No I don’t have live 64bit CD, only DVD.
It worked after installation perfectly, this second install in the first same thing happened.
I believe the driver was i915 .
