I burned the DVD image (3.6Gb) into a disk. I loaded the disk and started the installation by using the (bios) boot menu (pressing F12) to run the installation disk. I then see two entries of the installation disk in the boot menu, that is, the DVD drive containing the installation disk appears twice in the boot menu.
I have tried installing in two different machines and got the same results. I did not observe this with Leap 42.
Has anyone ever seen this and why is this the case?
On my main desktop computer, if I use the BIOS menu then I sometimes see two boot entries when booting an install USB. And I think that’s what you are describing.
One of those entries to boot with UEFI. The other is to boot in traditional legacy BIOS (MBR) mode (sometimes called CSM). If I enable secure-boot in the BIOS, then I only see the UEFI boot entry.
I should maybe add that on a different computer, I only see one boot entry – it depends on whether I have configured BIOS settings on that computer for UEFI booting or for CSM booting. Different computer manufacturers handle this differently.
I do not know if that is what you are describing.
If it is, then you have to decide whether to boot in UEFI mode or in legacy BIOS mode. Whichever way you boot the installer will be the way that it sets up the installed system to boot.
If you already have other systems (maybe Windows), then check if those systems are using UEFI booting or Legacy BIOS booting. And install openSUSE to boot the same way as your other systems.
After looking into my UEFI settings, I made the changes you suggested and your solution is correct. Only one boot entry for the installation disk now appears.
Sorry to resurrect this thread but my problems are not yet over.
Basically, when I choose to boot up the LEAP 15 installation DVD through the UEFI boot menu (pressing F12 key), I see two entries of the installation disk in the boot menu, that is, the DVD drive containing the installation disk appears twice in the UEFI boot menu.
However, by enabling secure boot in the UEFI settings, I solved my original problem in my AMD desktop (many thanks to nrickert).
Now, I am getting the same problem on my Acer laptop where the secure boot mode is already enabled and yet there appears two entries for the DVD drive containing the installation disk and both are similarly identified as UEFI entries.
Thinking that I had a defective disk (or infected copy), I downloaded and burned another image, but I am still getting the same results.
Any ideas why this is still happening. Thanks in advance.
Next, I will copy/burn the iso image to a bootable USB. Maybe this issue is DVD (disk) related.
My only UEFI PCs I use in UEFI mode both do this, Asus and Gigabyte. It isn’t just with DVDs that they duplicate entries, very annoying, and the rest of their BIOS menus are similarly bad about priorities and UEFI vs CSM.
I was just confused with what the firmware was reporting (duplicating) that made me pause to think if there was something I missed, or was doing wrong.
I can see that it has to be the UEFI (firmware) creating this entries.
Thank you very much for your replies and great help.
