We moved from one house to another about 3 weeks ago.
My Linux server was working just fine prior to the move, but since moving into the new house, I can not get it to boot into the O/S.
I’m using SuSE Linux 11.3.
My PC is running a quad-core at 2.6Ghz, with 8 Gb of RAM.
The first solution that came to my mind is that something “jarred” loose during the move, so I attempted to re-seat all of the hardware.
The system boots all the way past the splash screen, but stops after displaying the attached screenshot.
I can’t seem to get it to go any further.
I downloaded 11.4, thinking that maybe I could just install a newer version of the O/S, but it just hangs at the same place every time, and the screen just goes black!
I tried to upload a screenshot of the last screen I can see before the screen goes black, but it seems I don’t have enough permissions to upload to this site!

Since you can download a CD/DVD image, what about downloading a LiveCD and booting from it. You do not need to load Linux onto the PC to see if it will work. As for the server, they just sit and run all of the time. Most often, you do not end up with a problem until your turn it off and then back on again later, that is when hardware will fail. A LiveCD that will load all the way might suggest a hard disk problem. If you get the GNOME LiveCD, you could try QPARTED on the server hard disk and see if it could be “fixed” even. Of course, memory, power, video cards can all fail at the time of their choosing, so somehow you must dig through the clues and come up with a solution. As for doing an upload, we don’t upload files here, but normally try to capture screen text somewhere and past it into a message with error messages and such. You can use Fast, Free Image Hosting - ImageBam to upload images and put a pointer to them in your message OR you can use SUSE Paste to upload large amounts of text and again, point to it from a forum message.
Thank You,
I would suggest booting in runlevel 3 to exclude X and other graphics issues, then pressing Esc as soon as you see the splash screen and watch the boot an init process to find out where it stops. It - for example - it fails while checking the filesystem(s), it could be the hard disk.
I finally got the server to come up, and it appears to be working now.
I took the server down to my local CompUSA, as I was so frustrated, I was willing to pay someone else to troubleshoot any hardware issues, as I was certain it wasn’t a software, or O/S issue. (I could not boot into runlevel 3, or any other runlevel. It would not get that far!)
As soon as they plugged it in, it came right up!
That told me that my issue wasn’t with the server itself, but with something I was connecting to, or with.
I’m not 100% sure, as I tried so many different things, but it appears as if one or more of my USB ports isn’t working correctly with my keyboard and mouse!
I say that, because they worked well enough for me to get into the BIOS, but once beyond the BIOS, that’s where the issues began. (Note: I’m using a single USB cable to connect to a 4-port, dual monitor KVM switch. The mouse and keyboard share the same single USB connection.)
In the end, I moved the USB cable to another empty slot on the back of the server, and the server finally booted. (My MB has 2 USB ports connected on one built-in controller, and another 2 USB ports connected on another built-in controller. It appears as if both of the ports connected to the one controller are having this issue. The server finally booted after I plugged into the secondary controller.)
Thanks for trying to help, and hope everyone had a great weekend!

That is very interesting that the issue was hardware and USB keyboard and mouse related. Since this is so basic, it hardly comes to mind. Another user though had a similar experience as I recall, but the problem was being caused by a very low battery on a wireless keyboard and that fix also caught me by surprise. But, we are very happy that you got to the bottom of that issue. It is also interesting that you mention CompUSA. We used to have one of these in Austin Texas were I live and I purchased many things from them over some 10 years including my present HP Inkjet printer, but alas, they closed the store a couple of years ago. I guess I thought they were going to be online only and so I did not know they still had any real stores. I do miss going to their store, but it has been replaced by the monster outlet here called Fry’s. It is really the only place to go anymore for the computer hobbyist that likes to build their computers together from scratch. Anyway, is was a blast from the past to hear the name CompUSA again.
Thank You,
Hi James,
Yes, CompUSA has closed many of its stores, even here in Tampa.
But, they still have a few outlet stores around.
CompUSA is the retail store front, while Tiger Direct is the online store.
They are actually one and the same. If you look, like I do, at the daily deals and flyers, Tiger Direct and CompUSA publish the exact same ad, every day, with the same specials and same prices!
At least you live in one of the two best cities in Texas… San Antonio and Austin…
I spent a little time in Austin, going through a printing class back around 1998, when I was working for IBM Global Services. And I really like the river / canal in San Antonio, with all of the restaurants lining both sides of the canal.
I also spent a few months in San Angelo back in the early 1980’s.
Anyway, thanks for your help, and have a great summer. What’s left of it!

It is always of interest to hear from someone that has been in the local area. Oddly, I did not know Tiger Direct was the old CompUSA. I did order a hard drive from them last year and when it arrived in a plain white box, the SATA connector was broken. I had to get a return number and sent in the bad one at my own expense. I did get a replacement, but no credit for the cost or time I was out. With all of the online options, I don’t need to deal with a retailer that treats its customers that way though I guess I am lucky to get a working part from them at all. When speaking about CompUSA, my first experience with them was back in Houston when they opened their first store there. I am foggy on the exact year, but it was early 90’s anyway. I was invited to their opening party where they actually served Caviar and Smoked Salmon among other things and I even got a Gold Cross pen with the word CompUSA on it. I really had never seen such an opening before, but that was Houston with lots of oil money at the time. This is also the place where I waited in line at midnight for the release of Windows 95 in August of 1995 of all things. I went home and loaded it before going to bed, for not very many hours of sleep as I recall. I spent lots of money at that store as well. So, nothing like going down memory lane. I also wish you to have a good summer as well and try to stay cool. That is pretty hard as we seem to break record high temperatures here every day. It was 106 Degrees F on Saturday in Austin and my trusty thermometer in my PC room is saying 102.9 degrees F right now and it is only 1:49 PM. No rest for the weary it would seem.
Thank You,
I was there from June 1982 through November 1982. I was in the Navy! My first daughter was born there, during that short stay!
