My system: OpenSUSE Tumbleweed.
My hardware: Toshiba A200-209 laptop http://www.toshiba.eu/discontinued-products/satellite-a200-209/ .
The system worked properly with kernel 4.8.14-1-default. I updated the kernel to the latest current version for Tumbleweed: kernel-default-4.9.0-1.1.x86_64 (http://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss/suse/x86_64/ ) and kernel-default-4.9.0-2.1.x86_64 (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/Factory:/Update/standard/x86_64/ ).
Every time when I try to start the system, the kernel does not boots, but immediately automatic reboot (before loading GRUB2). Booting stops (hangs) on “Loading initial ramdisk” and kernel 4.9 does not boot. Only kernels older than 4.9 work.
I tried to install the kernel-default-4.9.0-3.1.gf4d3acd.x86_64 (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard/x86_64/ ), but the situation every time is the same.
Reproducible: Always.
Anticipating possible questions: (1) Yes, I used the option zypper ref, zypper dup. It does not help. (2) journalctl: the lack of any logs (I do not see anything). Removing the “quiet” option from GRUB2 did not help. No information or logs.

I have the same problems with my Toshiba T115D laptop. Update to last stable kernel kernel-default-4.9.0-3.1.gf4d3acd.x86_64.rpm did not help.

Same here with Toshiba L75D

Ken
linux since 1994
S.u.S.E./openSUSE since 1996
Same here with the new kernel 4.9.0-2-default.
Toshiba laptop A300.
It has been rock solid till 4.8.14.
Regards,
System: Host: linux-s4s1 Kernel: 4.8.14-1-default x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: Cinnamon 3.2.7
Distro: openSUSE Tumbleweed

i was able to boot thru kernel shown without issues, i have not been able to boot 4.9 kernel, boot process goes from grub screen to bios screen in endless loop, otherwise every update has installed without issue, as a workaround i have added lock to ‘kernel-default’ and un-installed 4.9 kernel.
there was mention of relation to wifi chip, mine is Intel WiFi Link 5100 driver: iwlwifi
added comment to bug report https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1017783
Wanted to point out the following important points about kernel locks:

I have updated to new kernel kernel-default-4.9.1-1.1.g1072b39.x86_64 from kernel/stable repository but problem remains
I have a dl360 G5 server with the same issue. It’s been some time since I have had to do this. What are the step to roll back the kernel?
I pressed e at grub screen and entered to old kernel files. My server is up again.
Same problem here with a Tosbiba C50 laptop and the 4.9 kernel. The 4.9 kernel in Kubuntu 16.10 works fine.

Folks,
we have a test kernel on the bugzilla: https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1017783 here:
https://build.opensuse.org/package/binaries/home:joeyli:branches:openSUSE:Factory:bsc1017783/kernel-default?repository=standard
In case you wanna run it and confirm that it boots for you.
Also, we will have a proper fix too later so stay tuned. I’ll ping you when we’re ready.
Thanks!
Thanks, bpetkov! Appreciate you and all your effort!!!

Ok,
we have a candidate fix.
I’d appreciate it if folks who can reproduce, tested the kernel here:

Thanks.

There is a modified kernel candidate on the bug report which has resolved the issue for many people, including myself. I did a fresh install this morning on the Toshiba laptop, which continually rebooted at GRUB, using the modified kernel and all is working as it should. It is requested that people with the issue try the kernel and share their result on the bug report.

Yes. Do you know which bug report is responsible for this issue? Or is there already a solution?
