I have my new problem with my laptop. I use suse 11.1 now but this problem is not limited to suse it happens with all flavors of linux. when I boot the laptop the process stops at ata 2, 3, and 4 each time I have to hit enter to progress further. If I do not hit enter the boot stays at a stand still, I have waited up to 45 minutes just to see if it would go on without me hitting enter. Once booted the system works fine.
Enter the verbose mode during boot by hitting esc. and read the text for clues.

what is “ata 2, 3, and 4”? hard drives? do you have four hard drives…
do you mean it is pausing during the initial BIOS setup?
black screen, white text, BEFORE any green screen comes?
maybe you need to enter the BIOS setup and adjust it some (like, tell
it the desired boot device)…i do not know how to do that for YOUR
machine [but do for mine]…
i’d guess the user/owner manual that came with yours should have some
hints…if not, visit the manufactureres web site and download
additional material…

It is on the green boot screen, I hit esc to see the details of the boot. I will try to right down each line that it freezes on later on tonight. Thanks for the reply’s.

Hello Takiniteasy,
It looks like you have not set one of the oprerating systems to default.
Login to openSUSE and do the following:
Select Kmenu/Computer/Yast/System/Bootloader In the bootloader
settings screen you see the operating systems you can boot into from
GRUB. Normally one of the operating systems has a flag in the default
column. If this is not the case you can select the operating system
that should start by default and press the set as default button at the
right/lower end of the screen. Click the finish button and the next
time the selected system will start automatically after the preset
number of seconds. You can change that from the same screen by
selecting the bootloader installation TAB, clicking bootloader option
button and change the time out in seconds to the required value.
