Looking for some help please,
Attempting to install suse leap 42.1 from dvd media.
I currently have system setup with Ubuntu installed on m.2 ssd, identified as /dev/nvme0n1p1 .
I have an empty 500gb identified as /dev/sda , which is recognised as a boot option at bios. this is my target for leap 42.1.
Booting system from dvd installation media launches straight into grub rescue screen.
I have checked the sum file of the downloaded iso, the sha file and and burnt dvd and everything matches so I’m confident of the installation media.
I’ve also attempted to build a USB drive to boot from, with no success. System hangs on a blank screen with a cursor waiting but system is unresponsive to ctrl+alt+del for restart.
My conclusion is its my system setup thats the problem, but I cant see how to solve it.
Setup is briefly;
Intel i5 6600K
ASUS z170I mobo
Samsung NVME m.2 SSD 256gb
Samsung 500gb SATA
USB DVD drive
Thanks
Matt
I’m not clear on what you are reporting here.
Are you trying to install, and get grub rescue mode? Or are you trying rescue mode from the DVD and something goes wrong?
If you are trying to install, then grub should only come into play if you are booting with UEFI. Have you tried this with secure-boot disable in your BIOS? (The secure-boot support is a bit broken in the 42.1 installer, and this causes problems on some computers unless you disable secure-boot).
Booting from DVD to install goes to screen displaying grub rescue mode. Installer does not launch. Sounds like I need to disable secure boot. Thanks for the advice.
Disable secure-boot for install.
Make sure that the box for secure-boot support is checked in boot settings (so that you can later re-enable secure boot).
After install, do an online update. After the update, it should be okay to re-enable secure-boot. The updates do fix that problem.
The chances are that this will get everything working for you.
Disabled compatibility support mode in bios and fast boot. Installed in UEFI mode from USB with no problems. Thanks for the advice. I look forward to trying out opensuse for a change.
