Boot from DVD

maybe you downloaded LiveCD?
OR rescueCD which come to think about it is about that size.

that was probably why I was having issues. I will post back later or tomorrow.

Thanks again!

At the download help page there is a suggestion for an addon to Firefox,
to use Metalinks. This method ensure that there are no download or
transmission errors.

looks like I had the wrong file but there are still issues. My CPU isn’t recognizing the USB that I am putting in my machine. Any ideas?

It does recognize CD but for some reason not the DVD>

Thanks!

I hope this is not your problem, but just in case:

My Acer laptop refused to recognize the USB key, for booting order or devices in the BIOS, no matter what I tried at first. I could use the USB key, however, to read files to & from with either Windows or Linux running.

I thought there might be a BIOS upgrade, but it turned out that I had already installed the latest. I tried opening the laptop up & pulling the CMOS battery, and other methods to clear the BIOS. Cleared the BIOS, then set it back up, but the problem persisted.

In final desperation, I decided to try to reburn the BIOS with the same version I already had installed (the latest). This, of course, can be a problem on some machines, because the BIOS install programs will often refuse to install the firmware unless it is newer than what is installed.

Fortunately, though, the Acer BIOS upgrade would burn, and did.

After that, the USB key was recognized and I could manage it in boot order, etc.

However, after using various different USB devices, after awhile the problem would return. That, unfortunately, could again only be cured by reburning the BIOS.

Obviously, that is a risky method to fix things. BIOS chips are not meant to be repeatedly burned, plus a burst of unclean power could cause the burn to fail and possibly brick the machine.

As I said, I hope this is not your problem. But, you might check it out.

EFI? It stores some boot data in a flash memory under “bios” control. It
can fill up, and apparently some bioses are unable to clear it out.

If a better method to erase that area (than reflashing the bios) can not
be found, the alternative would be to tell grub instead to boot from the
usb stick when needed.

Nope. No EFI.

Just an unresolved flaw in the BIOS chip or firmware.

And, the Grub alternative wouldn’t work at the time, since it was a Windows-only machine and Grub was not installed. Even so, it would have had to boot from a Grub on the HD, then use that to boot from the stick, which did not always work right with all bootable utilities.

Finally running on OpenSUSE - thanks for the help.

My CPU wasn’t reading my flashdrive hence the problem I was having. I loaded up on a DVD and kicked off the install.

Thanks again!
