After updating 12.1 RC1 to 12.1 without changing any partition I got the
boot message
“Waiting for device /dev/sda2 to appear … could not find /dev/sda2”
While using 12.1 RC1 the naming of system partitions is changed, e.g. from /dev/sda2 from /dev/sde2
If it’s necessary to change the name of the partitions, it would be necessary to update the boot description.
After some waiting minute a fall back question is used - but using the wrong keyboard language.
Additional the boot mechanism should use the correct keyboard language.
I’m using a german keyboard, but the boot is using an american keyboard, and therefore
the question “… fall back, Y,n:” the boot is only working, when the answer is “Z” …
My suggestion is to do a clean install, but do not format the /home area, but only mount it. You can use custom partitioning, mount the orginal root / partition as before and format, mount the old /home as before, but only mount it and do not format it. swap, should be just used. Mount any other existing partitions you want to keep. All personnel settings should be kept, but you need to reinstall all applications. Try it, it is as good as an upgrade. Make sure your boot drive is shown first in the installation section before you allow the install to proceed.
