Boot device menu issue; screen resolution changed to 1024x768

Hello;

I’ve installed Leap 15.5 kde onto my PC after replacing a failed internal 3-1/2" hard drive with a Samsung 870 SSD. Other than that I have a 10-year old unit with Asus bios that hasn’t been updated because I’ve never had issues with it. (Does it need an update?)

At bootup I’m now presented with a menu that says:

Please select boot device:

  Windows Boot Manager
  UEFI OS (P1: Samsung SSD 870 EVO 2TB)
  opensuse secureboot (P1: Samsung SSD 870 EVO 2TB)
  P0: Samsung SSD 870 EVO 2TB  (1907729MB)
  WD 6400AAV External (610480MB)
  Enter Setup

I’ve never seen that before.

When I “ESC” to boot using defaults, the resolution defaults to 1024x768 when it should be 1920x1080 and I cannot change it. I’ve looked at journalctl but can’t make sense of it.

Can someone point me in the direction I should look? I am a user, not a Linux sysadmin.

Thanks!

Bill

That looks like a BIOS message. Linux has not yet been started.

Hello Neil;

You’ve nailed the problem - it was a BIOS issue, but not what you might think, and the whole story is somewhat embarrassing.

After I read your comment last night I updated the BIOS on my machine; Asus have a utility that makes this a straightforward endeavour. I then proceeded to install 15.5 from scratch (again) and this time I happened to notice that I could not type an upper-case “o” with my left Shift key.

I looked more closely at my keyboard and saw that the Esc, F7, and F8 keys were stuck down. An even closer inspection revealed that a syrupy substance (dried chocolate milk, I think) had spilled onto the keyboard. On an Asus BIOS, F7 is depressed to go into Advanced Setup mode, and with that key stuck down, that caused the issue.

My grandsons are now barred from eating or drinking near my computers.

Thank you so much for steering me in the right direction!

Yours in gratitude,

Bill

From this distance, I would not have guessed that.

Thanks to both of you :slight_smile:

You resolved my puzzle why new monitor [LG (GoldStar) FULL HD] kept showing similar BIOS message.
