I am trying to switch from Ubuntu to SUSE 11.4 but need help installing Boinc for World Community Grid–

It appears that Boinc version 6.4.5 is in the openSUSE repository.

The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) is an open-source software platform which supports distributed computing, primarily in the form of “volunteer” computing and “desktop Grid” computing. It is well suited for problems which are often described as “trivially parallel”. BOINC is the underlying software used by projects such as SETI@home, Einstein@Home, ClimatePrediciton.net, the World Community Grid, and many other distributed computing projects.

I don’t know anything about it, but it is an option if you install openSUSE 11.4. Be aware that openSUSE uses Grub Legacy while Ubuntu uses Grub2. After loading openSUSE, Ubuntu will no longer load without some additional work, even if you leave the partitions untouched. Don’t be afraid to ask for Partitioning help if you need it.

If you open Yast’s Software Management and type boinc in the search box it finds boinc packages, I’m guessing you need boinc-client and boing-gui

Just tick the boxes at the side of them and click Accept (boinc-doc and bonc-gui-lang will probably get auto-selected)

These packages are in the OSS repo so unless you’ve made changes to your repositories and removed OSS (bad idea) you should find them ok

Its James again from Austin Texas - It is our policy in the openSUSE forums to blame all mistakes on computers. I will try to remember that

I’ve been using boinc continuously for years. Now on Boinc Manager 6.10.x Guess I got that from the berkeley site. Not all versions of suse like all versions of boinc. It does little harm to the functionality if you have to roll back to older versions. My openSuSe is 11.4

I did download from Yast’s Software Management but it still wont connect to the project—any ideas anyone>??
