I’ve had problems with boinc for years. Boincmgr never wants to connect. The only solution was to start boincmgr from the terminal as root. Now, not even that works. I get a pop-up that says “Communicating with BOINC client. Please wait…” but it never connects. It locks up boincmgr and the terminal. I have to do ctrl-c to clear it.
I was going to delete all instances (I’ve installed several times over the years) of boinc and try a fresh install. I don’t remember my credentials, so will lose years of credits. The most important thing is how to get rid of it cleanly and re-install properly. My latest install was flatpak.
I have done reinstall of both system boinc-client and boinc-manager using yast software and not lost accrued points. Done it several times and it sometimes solves problems; sometimes not. Never used flatpak; only system install.
But never lost the points from any project.
Regarding passwords, Go to project tab. Click on any project, then click on properties. Properties will show the url for the project and your username. Go to that url and try login and then say lost password and you can enter a new one. You don’t need the old one to get in. You can reset all passwords if you wish.
I also have not used the flatpak, and just install ‘boinc-client’ and ‘boinc-manager’.
I’ve done notes for myself to make sure it’s intalled properly and what to do if it’s not working properly.
When you check System Monitor has the Boinc process started?
If so, then these are my troubleshooting notes:
sudo systemctl stop boinc.service
Delete the /home/yourusername/gui_rpc_auth.cfg file
cd /var/lib/boinc
cp gui_rpc_auth.cfg /home/<yourusername>
cd ~
sudo chmod 640 gui_rpc_auth.cfg
sudo systemctl start boinc-client.service
open Boinc Manager application → it should now connect and ask to choose project.
Thank you. This worked for me as well. I have two instances of BOINC installed, presumably, one from my attempt at Flatpak. I will always start boincmgr from the command line from now on.
