I was considering getting a Bluray burner for backing up my hi-def home videos, but was wondering about updating the burner’s firmware if needed. Has anyone done this in Linux? Or is it only possible in Windows? When I get a new PC sometime in the near future, it will be Linux only, so Windows won’t be an option. My current PC has removable hard drives, so I can plug in Windows XP (it won’t run Vista or “7”), but these are all PATA drives. The new one will be SATA, I don’t want to spend lots of money for all the junk to use removable SATA hard drives, and don’t want to waste money on Windows 7 just to update the firmware.

Let me say that I have upgraded the firmware in a lot of Optical drives and except for few that used DOS, all the rest run in Windows only. It would be hard to say no optical drive firmware can be updated from Linux, but I have not run into one so far. They would be considered rare at best. It is a reason to use dual boot though I understand the desire to go Linux all the way. I can say that the need to update optical drives is not as bad as it once was, but it still does occur and a reason to get a quality drive over the cheapest in town.

I used to update the firmware of my drives (cd burner) with windows running
in virtualbox.
It worked (then) for me, but i’m not sure if it is a safe way to do this.
Cd burners were cheap so i just tried it, but blueray burners arn’t cheap.
