Bluetooth on Suse 11.1 KDE 3.5

Hi

I am having trouble getting the Bluetooth to work on my new laptop (M6400). I have installed Suse 11.1 64 Bit with KDE 3.5. The bluetooth device that I want to use is a Dell mouse but I can’t seem to get the laptops bluetooth module (Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth 2.1) working for some reason.

I have had a good look through the forums, namely -

openSUSE 11.1 KDE3 Bluetooth solution - openSUSE Forums
OpenSuse 11.1 - Belkin Bluetooth usb won’t connect
bluetooth on 11.1

and have installed bluez from Webpin.

Below is the list of bluetooth packages that I have installed and other info -

3000a:/home/smith # rpm -qa | grep blue
bluez-gnome-1.8-2.5
bluez-4.22-6.1.1
bluez-hcidump-1.42-17.39
bluez3-test-3.32-14.1
kdebluetooth-1.0_beta8-171.44
bluez3-3.32-9.1
bluez-firmware-1.2-28.72
bluez3-utils-3.32-14.1
libbluetooth2-3.32-9.1
libbluetooth3-4.22-6.1.1
pulseaudio-module-bluetooth-0.9.12-9.5
kdebluetooth-lang-1.0_beta8-171.44

hciconfig -a returns nothing?
3000a:/home/smith # hciconfig -a
3000a:/home/smith #

hcitool scan finds nothing but I have a Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth 2.1 module ?
3000a:/home/smith # hcitool scan
Device is not available: No such device
3000a:/home/smith #

lsusb doesn't seem to find the Bluetooth module as well.

3000a:/home/smith # lsmod | grep btusb

kbluetooth starts ok but is greyed out.
3000a:/home/smith # kbluetooth
kbuildsycoca running...

and when clicked on gives "The process for the bluetooth protocol died unexpectedly."

Any ideas??

Try

lspci

and then

lspci -k

post result

Hi caf4926

Hi caf4926

I also ran lspci -v but same result and I have double checked the laptop order (Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth 2.1). The laptop even came with a bluetooth mouse.

I have half the output in this post and the rest in the next (greater than 1500 characters)

Do you have the bluetooth switched ON via the Fn button?

Hi caf4926

Good question…the switch for the bluetooth/wireless card is On.
Had to run the lspci commands again (just to be sure) and searched the output for blue or wireless but no luck unfortunately.

The light for the activiated bluetooth comes On so the laptop thinks that all is well.

Hang on…the kbluetooth is no longer generating an error when clicked on…maybe bluez software updates/reboots etc have helped.

I have run my initial tests again, output is below, very positive

Now just need to work out how to connect the mouse…

When I mouse over the kbluetooth icon in the tray, the Adapter, Address and Mode are all blank. When I try to setup the Adapter, the settings are not be saved. Probably doing something silly.

Thanks for your help

This how mine looks in kde4
Right click the icon in the tray (mine is blue / not grey)
I opened my device manager, 1 item is already in there and I then opened ‘New’ so you can see that.

Hi caf4926

My kbluetooth is still grey and adapter etc is not found.

kbluetooth
kbluetooth Adapter

Any idea on how to fill in the adapter so the bluetooth is active?

Thanks

Hi

I have the interesting case of the command line finding the bluetooth mouse but the GUI kbluetooth not.

Any ideas on how to configure kbluetooth so the mouse can be used via bluetooth?

I’ll get back to you on this. I don’t have kde3 installed. But I have a VM I can add it to so as to have a look. It may give me some ideas. Meantime scan the forum, I know there are plenty of posts about it.

I have checked out kde3 and it wasn’t pretty. Might be worth considering kde4 or gnome. It just depends how important it is to you to use kde3 (which is great and rock solid incidentally) and or bluetooth.

Sorry I can’t be any more help.

Hi caf4926

I am a fan of KDE 3.5 as it just works and is solid. Not as pretty as KDE 4, I know.

I am currently reviewing John Rushby: Bluetooth between Linux and Cellphone

I have managed to get a lot further than when I started with your help.

Thanks

Hi

Found something interesting, command line can find the identity of the bluetooth device (mouse) where kbluetooth can’t.

http://thumbnails13.imagebam.com/3295/18e91e32946165.gif](http://www.imagebam.com/image/18e91e32946165)

What does that mean?

Hi

Found something else, I had the following package installed -
hci_usb-kmp-default - The old driver for USB Bluetooth dongles.

YaST mentions that “btusb” driver is the new driver, but where do you install it from? YaST can not find it, Google mentions it but doesn’t appear to list the rpm to use…

I have removed the hci_usb-kmp-default package hoping to force the latest bluetooth driver install but no luck.

Anyone know anything about btusb bluetooth drivers?

Hi
btusb is a kernel module, when you YaST search check the box called
file list

lsmod command will show you if it’s there eg;

lsmod |grep bt
btusb 10768 4
bluetooth 52800 13 hidp,sco,rfcomm,bnep,l2cap,hci_usb,btusb
usbcore 165892 7
hci_usb,uvcvideo,btusb,usb_storage,ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd

Hi malcolmlewis

Thanks for the reply.

A kernel module, that explains why I couldn’t find the rpm package :shame:

lsmod returned the following, so it looks like the latest bluetooth driver is installed. As I said in a previous post, I have deleted the old bluetooth driver as the laptop is a M6400 hence latest bluetooth driver is probably the way to go.

smith@3000a:~> lsmod |grep bt
btusb 13264 2

Does it all look ok?

I have the same clues as before unfortunately. The command line can find the identity of the bluetooth device (mouse) where kbluetooth can’t. kbluetooth still has a blank Adapter, Address and Mode.

Any ideas?

Hi
Well it all looks ok, umm use Gnome it works fine  <ducking>

Have you tried some of the hcitool commands, like;

hcitool cc <badrr>
hcitool info
hcitool inq
etc

Hi malcolmlewis

I have run the tests requested and mostly I think it looks pretty good except for the actual connection.

Checking on the laptops bluetooth module.

But trying to connect to the mouse was a different story. I could connect (kbluetooth showed via a pop up that 00:07:61:E9:60:E5 was connected) but it wasn’t really. ie mouse did not work and in Konqueror bluetooth:/ it showed 00:07:61:E9:60:E5 with Unknown bluetooth Device Class.

kBluetooth only showed a connection when the command “hcitool cc 00:07:61:E9:60:E5” was run on the command line.
Even then when you check the connected devices it came up empty on the command line.

What do you make of the connection attempts?

I am guessing that if kbluetooth was setup correctly the adapter would be BlueZ 3000a (0) which is hci0?
Unfortunately when I try to fill in the details on the blank Adapter for kbluetooth it is not saved.

What is the gnome version of kbluetooth, if you are happy that all is well on the command line maybe that is worth a try?

Thanks for your help.

Hi malcolmlewis

I am keen to get the mouse working so I checked up on the Gnome side and found gnome-bluetooth, installed it and err:shame: how do you start it?

I found the gnome-obex-server which is installed at the same time but no gnome-bluetooth.

There is no menu entry and trying gnome-bluetooth from the command line comes up blank…am I losing it??

Whats the trick?
