Blank Screen - ATI X1600 Card with OpenSuse 11.1

HI Everyone,

I am having real trouble with Opensuse 11.1 and my ATI X1600 graphics card. The computer boots up just fine, till after the Progress Bar when my screen goes black, except for the Mouse Pointer (which I can move around)

I can logout and use IceWM instead of KDE, however, so the card does work at least outside KDE. In IceWM, I followed the directions at this link (using the driver for Older Cards): Howto: Install The Latest ATi Driver On OpenSuSE 11.1 But when I run fglrxinfo, I get this:

X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 144 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 12
Current serial number in output stream: 12

I’m also including my xorg.conf file below. I’m really puzzled by this.

see if that gets you anywhere

at least it should net you to a gui without effects.

Well thank you very much. That does it for me, so now I’m getting a KDE desktop.

Does that mean though, that I have to buy a newer video card if I want the eye candy?

Well looking at the drivers on the ATI/AMD site the x1600 is only supported
upto the 9.3 release.

When you choose that card it automatically drops to “Legacy” and gives you
the d/load.

I do not know the capabilities of that card when it comes to the effects,
sorry bu the only way to find out is to install the drivers and then un-
comment the composite “on” option at the bottom of your xorg.conf and try
it.

if you do not get a graphical login then if you can drop to a console with
Ctrl+Alt+F1 issue

init 3

and comment it out again

Or make sure SysRq is enabled it the Yast>System>/etc/sysconfig editor (
just do a search for it )

and if your machine is locked solid then press ( in this order )

Hold down the Alt+SysRq ( which is the printscreen key )

Press

s
s
u
b

s= sync the drives so that a auto fsck should not happen on boot, I do it
twice just to make sure

u= unmounts the file systems and re-mounts read only

b= reboot

Voila

this should reboot the machine unless the kernel is really really hosed,
then just type 3 at the grub boot screen to get into a console login, login
as root and edit the xorg.conf.

That should get you back, if not then holler someone will help.

HTH
