Black screen during log in.

Hi Guys,

I’ve got a problem with my openSuse 11.3 for a few days. This is my first Linux so i’m kind of rookie.
OK, let’s start.

I installed it something like 1 month ago and everything looks good until now. When I turn on my PC and try to login (deskop mode) login bar goes from 30% to 50% and then appears a black screen, nothing more, just deep black :frowning: (cannot type anything etc.) I use GRUB - Windows, opensuse deskop mode and failsafe mode. Failsafe mode works good, but I have no idea what should I do because I didn’t change anything. I even done a reinstall of OpenSuse and after one day I’ve got the same black screen.
Someting wrong with grapfic card drivers? (ati 4850, downloaded from ati page, works good for 1 month) maybe some kind of new update which was installed automatically?

Thanks.

There was an update to xorg that may have broke the graphic driver. You should be able to rebuild the driver ‘the hardway’ or re-install the proprietary driver.

Without knowing your knowledge level or without knowing what you installed for a proprietary graphic driver, its almost impossible to provide a good recommendatin.

You should be able to run with a radeon or radeonhd driver and not have to use failsafe mode. Did you try the boot code ‘nomodeset’ in grub menu, as advised in the openSUSE-11.3 release notes?

OK, it works now. I’ve done what You said, reinstall drivers in a safe mode, check logs, activate it. I was quite sure that I did it few days ago, my bad. Everything works I think.
If anything happen again, I will write here.

Thanks for help. You make my day!

Great news.

Glad to read the desktop graphics appear to be working again. Thankyou for sharing your solution.
