Bitdefender Installation eror

I tried installing Bitdefender for unices 64 bit into 11.2 Opensuse and i keep getting this Message: error: can’t create transaction lock on /var/lib/rpm/__db.000 (Permission denied)
Could not complete the installation of the package, aborting.

Any help on what i did wrong would be greatly appreciated.******

Repo database might be corrupt. Try rebuilding the repository database.
As root, do the foll:

# rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db.*
# rpmdb --rebuilddb

Have a read at:
SDB:RPM database corrupted - openSUSE
SDB:Rpm - The package manager of SuSE Linux - openSUSE

I tried this fix and this is what i got.

primal@linux-g0zs:~> rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db.
primal@linux-g0zs:~> rpmdb --rebuilddb
error: can’t create transaction lock on /var/lib/rpm/__db.000 (No such file or directory)
*

**This is how i tried to install.
**
chmod +x BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.amd64.rpm.run

./BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.amd64.rpm.run

both commands were done as root as everything preceded correctly until this.

I get the same results under Gnome and KDE.

You do know that you don’t really need this application in Linux?!

Indeed and I quote myself:

Try above cmds as root.

If you are still unable to install BitDefender, there is also Clam AV available for Linux. This has a KDE GUI front-end also, IIRC.

Anti-virus applications can be useful for Linux users who also have Windows installed - to check Windows files/folders for viruses.

Well yes, but it doesnt have that many other uses.

You don’t say:)

I don’t say, but do have a read here:

OP would get some additional AV’s for Linux from the first link.

Indeed. IMO mostly a load of FUD
And it plays on user ignorance and incompetence. (see image posted earlier)

Your most likely issue is rootkit exploits.

Yes but still linux AV clients mainly do windows viruses, and the few linux viruses out there are easy enough to avoid.

The references on the Wikipedia included ESET-NOD, Kaspersky, Syamntec/Norton for Linux Worms/Trojans & Viruses. It is doubtful they would spread FUD to such an extent.
Tho’ definitely Linux has a far, far lesser load of security threats than Windows, due in large part to how one uses it & how it’s organized. If you login as ‘root’ all the time, one is in a greater security risk than a non-root user for obvious reasons.

*(Saw the Homer_Simpson image) *… That must come from being online on Suse forums for such a long time.

What to install for those ?

IMO, installation of A-V programs on Linux is a matter of personal choice (and also to the extent one dual-boots w/ Windows or not).

Oh my, I think I can actually help with this one…

If you run: (to fetch the GPG key to verify your package):

gpg --recv --keyserver pgp.mit.edu 0x0EC4FE05

Then export it:

gpg --armor --export 0x0EC4FE05 > bd-pack.key

Then import it to the rpm key ring:

rpm --import bd-pack.key

The key should then be available when you run the file. I think this is just to verify the package hasn’t become corrupted.

You can run all future updates though the application (I went for the GUI as I know naff all about command line at the moment).

Sure they would - spreading that kind of FUD is how they make money;
scare unsuspecting users into buying things they don’t need. It’s a very
common marketing tactic.

If you are implying that image is representative of me, thanks. I guess you better not heed any advice I offer, because it looks like I have serious brain issues.

No, I don’t mean to affront you. Your advice has often been helpful.

You could call/ write to the support team. They will help you if you are having problems.

Assuming your rpm database isn’t corrupted, just add their repo.

zypper ar http://content-down.bitdefender.com/repos/rpm/bitdefender/

You can then just install it with the package manager. Request your free license here: Request Scanner License
