BIOS cpu temperature

Hi: running OpenSUSE 11.1 64bit AMD X2 5200. System information says my CPU is at 80C all the time, but the MB BIOS says I’m running at about 45C. I sure hope the bios is correct. Does OPenSUSE 11.1 have a temperature monitoring problem? Is there a way to confirm the real cpu temp? Appreciate any insight. John

Try booting with the Failsafe boot, see if it does the same.

Thanks for your reply. Checked System Information on Failsafe and also also within a minute of bootup and it shows 80C which is not possible I think. I assume the BIOS reading is likely correct but not sue why SUSE isn’t seeing it properly. John

I have the same processor in my box and they are fine, but it’s the bios that you need to look at. Perhaps do a bios update? And check the settings in your bios that might influence this.

How are you getting the temperatures? I know that on my motherboard the readings within opensuse are nonsense ranging from negative to positive. I’ve been considering getting an external temperature sensor just to see what is going on.

Thanks for your reply. I guess I’ve simply set up my MSI motherboard with the cpu fan sensor leads connected to where they’re supposed to be on the motherboard. As I mentioned, the BIOS reads a reasonable figure for the cpu (47C). I looked around the BIOS setup and couldn’t find anything to suggest an alternative way of reading cpu temperature. I just assumed the operating system had a way of tracking the numbers indicated in the BIOS. But, from what I can see so far, the BIOS reads OK - it’s just SUSE that doesn’t appear to in my situation. I even touched the cpu cooler to see if it felt hot but actually, while warm, I wouldn’t describe it as hot.

Regards, John

Hi
If your running lm_sensors, you probably need to adjust
the /etc/sensors.conf file and change the ‘set sensor’ setting.

With lm_sensors installed, make sure you run sensors-detect so that it can detect all of your monitoring hardware. I’ve never had any problems with readings on my AMD X2 hardware setups. However, lm_sensors doesn’t currently have a driver for my Phenom II, which sucks. :frowning: But 45 degrees sounds about right for that processor, though it could stand to run a lil cooler, around like 40 should be ideal when in BIOS.
