Bind a single key to a keyboard shortcut

Hello,

I would like to be able to bind single keys to keyboard shortcuts.
With Opensuse14.1 it was still possible to do so and I used this to easily tag images within digikam for example - it’s very convenient to bind single keys from the numpad to a tag a bunch of images.
But since 14.2 this doesn’t work anymore

I finally upgraded my old laptop where I used to do that kind of work and digikam even still displays the shortcuts like I set them a long time ago, but they refuse to work…
It’s possible to save and edit a schema with all keyboard shortcuts, but that didn’t work either. (This works with single letters but not with numbers from the numpad, which is strange)

It used to look like this, to bind a single number for example - Shortcut: Numpad+7
if I try it now, it looks like this - Shortcut: Numpad+7, Numpad+ … (but nothing happens, if I try to save it)

I don’t really want to go back to 14.1 just for that. Is there any way make it work like I need it again?

Isn’t this in a Desktop? Then you failed to explain which Desktop Environment.

And you have chosen LEAP 15.4 as prefix to your thread title, but you talk only about 14.1 and 14.2. So what are you using?

It’s KDE Plasma(x11) and the reason I mentioned 15.1 and 15.2 is just because it worked back in 15.1 and not anymore since 15.2 - right now I’m actually using 15.4
Sorry for that

Well, you typed 14.1 and 14.2, not 15.1 and 15.2. Very confusing.

Sorry, didn’t see that. It’s all about 15.x

So, with 15.1 it was possible to bind single numbers from the numpad to shortcuts, within digikam or even Dolphin, and that kind of broke after 15.2 came out (including 15.3 and 15.4).
I hope someone can help me with that

Please explain how configured such bindings. Not everybody will do things the same as you do, but they nevertheless are willing to help and to dig into something, but they need information.

For example I want to change a keyboard shortcut in Dolphin. In this case let’s say the shortcut to duplicate a file, which is Ctrl+D
and I want to change it to a single key on the numpad in this case Number7 - so a file gets duplicated once I hit Number7.

That’s something that used to work some time ago, but not anymore
Now I would have to add a ‘Ctrl+’ to it or some thing like that

And thank you for being so patient with me.

I see what you want, but how did you do that in the past (see where I made the crucial part in bold above)?

Again, describe exact and precise what you did in the past to achieve your goal. And where you get stuck when you try this now.

We can NOT look over your shoulder and see what you do!

Testing with the following KDE Plasma:

Operating System: openSUSE Leap 15.4
KDE Plasma Version: 5.24.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.90.0
Qt Version: 5.15.2
Kernel Version: 5.14.21-150400.24.21-default (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11

And, Dolphin version 21.12.3 –

  1. Duplicate file set to «NumPad + 7» doesn’t work.
  2. Duplicate file set to «Shift + NumPad + 7» doesn’t work.
  3. Duplicate file set to «Crtl + NumPad + 7» doesn’t work.
  4. Duplicate file set to «Crtl + Shift + NumPad + 7» doesn’t work.
  5. Duplicate file set to «Crtl + Ü» does work.
  6. Duplicate file set to «Crtl + 7» does work – (Keyboard “7” – not NumPad “7”).

Conclusion:

  • Currently, KDE Plasma will not allow shortcuts definitions using the Numeric Keypad keys.

It looks as if, a KDE Plasma Bug Report will be needed if, you wish to have this constraint changed.

  • I note that, there was a Ubuntu question made with respect to this topic more than 3 years ago – that question hasn’t been answered to date …
