Beta++

A while back lwfinger and gavinto brought up the idea of a MS5++. We believe it was the first individual that recommended it in the first place. Anyway, credit to both for bringing it to our attention.

Now then, we wondered what would happen IF we applied that logic to the latest 12.1. So we did. Changing our repos to factory instead of distribution and then using zypper to Update our Beta we got something that worked. (admittedly, after some frustration) One of the things that we wanted to bring out to everyone’s attention is … they have put the Symbolic boot back in… What???

Well, way back, I think it was versions 6.x and 7.x they showed the progress of the boot from the Sign-On to the Desktop with Symbols. The first is a Disk for disc operations, the second is the hammer and screw driver for tool setups and configurations, the third is a World for Network ops, the fourth is a Desktop symbol for Desktop setups and the last is the KDE symbol for KDE final settings. That is 5 areas which we were seeing before as the system was booting up… and it would hang in the last portion. Now we know what it is. -And- further investigation on the Web showed that we are not alone in our nVidia problems with KDE. So it is NOT necessarily our openSuSE that is causing these display problems. However, we need to get a proper driver from nVidia and we don’t believe that is going to happen until the final release. To many changes being made and nVidia is waiting for the dust to settle. That’s the way it has seemed on most of the previous versions.

We had nouveau working UNTIL we installed the “latest” nVidia driver… which didn’t work. Now nouveau won’t work properly. Even though we have backed out everything that was entered. The only way to get back to a “clean” nouveau is to re-install the Beta -and- that can be a nightmare. Depends on your luck of the draw -or- which side of your mouth you hold your tongue on. That transaction lock is a doozy.

We have also gotten VMware to work on the Beta. Not yet on the Beta++ but that will only involve a little more investigation.

All in all it looks like the 12.1 release is going to be a winner … if they can get this Display and Trans lock cleaned up.

Till then … have fun,
Chuck

Sorry, we are replying to our own. Found the problem with VMware. Somehow during the zypper update the run levels for VMware got changed. Had this happen before. For some reason run levels 2 and 3 get added in. Should only be run level 5.

Take care,
Chuck

That jibes with my observations. I have 2 boxes using older GF61xx Nvidia
chips and I can’t get the 12.1 Beta to install to anything but a clean
partition on either one - can’t even salvage the prior /home. These have
been a PITA since 11.1.
