I’m really interested in testing the KDE 4.6 betas and Kmail 2.0 (akonadi version). Not a experienced with OpenSUSE though and confused as to what would be the best starting point from a clean install

the milestone releases come with KDE 4.5.80, aka 4.6 beta1, that includes
kmail2. if you’re interested in the progress of KDE 4.6 in particular, you
might want to add the KDE:/Distro:/Factory repo at http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Distro:/Factory/openSUSE_Factory/
, which has progressed to KDE 4.5.85 by now, fixing some bugs &
functionality.
in my opinion though, if you want to test KDE 4.6, there’s no point not to
use openSUSE 11.4, since the milestone releases by now are fairly stable &
useable.
after installing from your install. medium (liveCD, DVD), you can add the
KDE-factory repo and do a ‘distribution update’ only from that repo:
if you don’t like the command line you can do the same in a GUI app, via
YAST’s software / repository management. let me know if you prefer that
and want to know how.
oops, re-checking the commands i recommended, i see that i made a mistake:
repositories are by default added without the ‘autorefresh’ option. to
change that, use the “-f” option for the first command:
zypper ar -f
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Distro:/Factory/openSUSE_Factory/
KDE-factory
zypper dup -r KDE-factory

I tried 4.5.85 on M4 but kdepim was still a big useless mess.

for me it’s working quite well. only thing i found not working is trying
to change ‘settings’ for the whole KDEPIM suite. (already reported & in
the works).

On a recent very rare occasion that kmail didn’t crash on start-up, I have
found two folders in kmail which purport to contain my migrated folders and
contents from 4.4.x. Why two outwardly identical folders, I’m not sure but
suspect they are both the result of failed migrations. They each contain a
small selection of migrated mail, but different. They both are fixtures -
neither can be deleted.
Nepomuk server is said not to be running and so storage is in a mess.
Hence(?), every time kmail tries to retrieve mail from my accounts, I’m
asked for my password for each account together with a password for the KDE
wallet, i.e. two password entries per account. That soon becomes rather
tiresome.
It’s thoughtful that the planners decided to use a new folder, “kmail2”
instead of “kmail”, but a pity that they didn’t think to extend this idea.
I’ve identified one file that I have to copy before running the 4.6 version
and then copy back on returning to 4.4. I hope there are not more that I’ve
missed.

I’m now on M5 and kdepim is working fine! Mind you, that may have something
to do with the KDE4.6 repo having had all the kdepim 4.6 modules replaced
with 4.4.8.
Does this mean KDE have given up on the new kdepim for the 4.6 release?
Perhaps it will now appear in 4.7?

This is just because the packaging for the Distro: repository is currently including the kdepim bundle from kde/stable/4.5.4/.
If you look in Unstable: you will find builds of kde/unstable/4.5.86/, which are dated 13dec2010 in the KDE sources. So this is what is needed to test KDE developments and KMail2. The KDE:Distro:Factory repusitory seems better for testing openSuSE packaging of Factory and future 11.4.
My current Kmail2 is workable but searching for messages does is broken (as is all akonadi related searching), and it is not fit for production. I feel that although openSuSE 11.3/11.4/Factory are good platforms for testing KDE-4.6-beta, bug reporting is best at bugs.kde.org.

Yes. but kdepim 4.5.86 was in KDE:Distro:Factory until recently (a day
ago?). Hence my thought that the plans for 4.6 - or 11.4 - may have changed
regarding kdepim.

I am also wondering about that. I am using the kde factory repo, and the transition from kmail1 to kmail2 was anything but smooth, and when I finally got it working (and started enjoying it), the repo went back to kdepim 4.4.whatever and kmail1, which is not working anymore as it seems to be incompatible with some configuration files of kmail2.
You would think the distros had learned something from the kde 4.0 fiasco…

I’ve only found one file that caused some problems whenever I switched back
to 4.4 from attempts to get 4.6 working. That was
~/.kde4/share/config/emailidentities. I would replace that with my last
backup copy when reverting to 4.4 and all would be back to normal.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear: the problem is not KDE 4.6 beta by itself, the problem is opensuse migrating to kmail2 in the factory repo, then reverting to kmail1 after a few days.
That’s the kind of behaviour I expect and understand in the unstable repo, not the factory one, but I may be mistaken.
Either kmail2 was/is ready or it is not, but I am not sure changing your mind twice in 10 days is a sign of good judgement.

I regard the use of kmail2 for 4.6 and kmail for 4.4 as a very good thing.
Neither version of kdepim could corrupt the files of the other. It’s just a
shame that the file I’ve already mentioned was missed out of this
arrangement.
