I tried to upgrade my KDE to new version (om this moment it’s 4.4.2) in many ways.
The result is the same:
KDE updated, BUT not worked sound (error message for my sound card) and KDE (ConsoleKit error).
Which best way to upgrade KDE to 4.4.2/4.4.1 on openSuse 11.2 and how you did that?
Thanks Carl for the hint.
Actually i use that way to update the whole system, which in most cases resolve the dependency and vendor issues. For example, K3b which some time have new packages in Factory but some time it have in OSS. If i install from Factory, and OSS have new version for k3b, so in the software management it will mark it as Red, which personally i don’t like. So i keep update the system with vendor change.
Appreciate your idea, in the next update i will add new method as method-3 to install from terminal with selected repos.
it’s just that once we use the switch or dup or dup -r, we will break some multi-media, including k3b.Your way or mine will do the same thing. Users need to be aware that they need to switch the vendor back to packman for k3b, kaffeine and possibly others.
My zypper dup -r, just reduces some other system wide upgrades which may switch from packman to ‘other’ when you do zypper dup.
Once you have the upgrade complete and all packages to the correct vendor, zypper up is sufficient. Or view in SManager and repo filter then update all in this list if newer ver avail. working thru each repo as required.
Although Zypper is a great tool, handling packages’ vendors is still a mystery to me
I’ve set up many repositories to get the latest&greatest software, but to get the latest versions of packages I actually have to change the corresponding vendor from GUI manually (for EVERY package).
Is there a way to tell Zypper (on “zypper up” or “zypper dup”) to check which vendor has the latest package and use that vendor, and do it for all the packages?
PS. Please don’t tell me to RTFM or google - I’ve done it many-many times
Honestly, I’m not entirely sure what you are getting at.
It will depend on your repo list. And if it’s significantly different to default + Packman, then you really ought to know the answer to this question, else not be using a detailed repo list.
Generally speaking, community repos will provide newer packages than the default 3 + packman.
They all have package One-Cool-App, but its version differs by repository. As I don’t wish to start walking through my repositories to check where is the latest version of the package, I’d like Zypper to figure out where is the latest&greatest version of the package and get it, from whichever repository.
And I’d like Zypper to do it for all packages I have installed.
