best skype like program for linux AND windows

hi guys,
i am looking for a skype-like program that i can set up for linux (on my computer) and on windows (for my girlfriends computer)that supports webcam because we live far away from each other… i would like something that is easy to set up and just works, i browsed the internet for ages and found a couple but i would like to hear you opinion on that, i need it to be easy, beacuse i am not that much of a crack and would like it to run nice and smooth,…and not be like a hard thing to set up… does it matter what sip-client i use? can i communicate between diffrent ones? any help would be greatly appreciated…

thanks

Any problem using Skype itself? You can use the video too and I am happy with that.

I also tried Kopete and it too worked. But, I am using Skype.

Skype with video on OpenSUSE 11.1 x86_64 - openSUSE Forums

Welcome to the Linux world. You want skype, you get it.

Another easy option for video conversation is the linux/mac version of MSN → aMSN! I have never used it, try installing Linux first, since you’re more familiar with it. If you choose to install aMSN and you encounter any problems, post back right here, I’ll assist.

Good luck

i have problems using skype :frowning: it installs all fine but than it says when i try to do that “test call” problems detecting audio something, i deinstalled it jhave to install it to get the exact error-message, i ggoogled it n its a known problem but i did not find a solution for it?

oo and i am using aMsn but i cant do lyk calls and stuff like that on there… and with skype, it says" problem with audio playback" but everything else works fine with my soundcard, like mp3s etc… i would really like to use it on my machine because i used to use it on linux and love the simplicity of it…
and wow thanks for your quick replies

Have you tried to configure audio in skype? Sometimes it doesn’t select the correct audio input or output device. Try from the Menu icon to select Options. In the dialog box that appears select the Sound Devices icon at the left part. Then configure the input and output devices. You can check the output device by pressing the button Make A Test Sound. You can also configure your camera using the Video Devices at the left of the Options dialog box.
One tip we should give you is that when your audio device is being used by another program, like AmaroK, the audio device will fail to be used by your skype. Pausing the AmaroK does not have any effect. You must quit it first and then answer your call…

wow dude thank you so much!!! it works!!! thanks heaps for that help!! i use xmms tho, i like the lay out of that…

thanks again!!!

but i have another question, i dont have a cam at the moment, but i heared it gives problems through linux because of firewall or something like that, like it wont work, have you heart anything of that? i cant say if it does because my cam isnt working on linux, i got to get another one…

Actually I have no problems with my webcams. I installed a Logitec webcam (quickcam pro, I think) on an old laptop. Then I bought another laptop which has an embedded webcam. I thought that Linux would never find it, but it works from the very beginning of the openSUSE 11.1 installation. On my mother’s computer (she lives far away from were I live) my brother bought her a M$ webcam, and I thought it would never work (Yes, my brother knows that I hate Bugosoft!..). But when I configured things remotely, everything was fine. I believe that once the camera is supported by a driver there will be no problems.
The old laptop runs openSUSE 11.1 32 bit, the new laptop runs openSUSE 11.1 64 bit and my mom’s computer runs openSUSE 11.0 32 bit.

oo ok thanks cool, if i will have problems i will post another post…

thanks for your help!
