Best place to get GIMP 2.8 for 64bit?

I looked in the forums and the previous recommendations for downloading gimp 2.8 were for the 32-bit version. So I have a few questions:

  1. I found this link (see below), how do I know it’s safe? Does openSUSE’s organization have anything to do with these builds?
software.opensuse.org: (under openSUSE 12.1, click "show unstable builds and choose the “home:Herbster0815” version)
    http://software.opensuse.org/ymp/home:Herbster0815/openSUSE_12.1/gimp.ymp?base=openSUSE%3A12.1&query=gimp

  2. Is it better to build from the official GIMP source, or is that a nightmare?

By safe, I mean, doesn’t have any malware put into the file.

Is there a better place to get it from?

One of the users :home builds should be fine

Thanks! I assume uninstalling current GIMP is a good idea?

No need
You add the repo and switch to it

Unless I am missing something here, installing Gimp 2.8 does not seem to result in a working copy of gimp when the libgimp and libgimpui files are still at version 2.6 and not included in the gimp 2.8 rpm files.

Thank You,

Hi everyone,

Is Gimp 2.8 aslo available for openSUSE 11.4? Or should I also use one of the :home builds?

Thanks

henkasdf

The place would be GNOME:Apps. But it doesn’t build there because openSUSE 12.1 doesn’t come with recent enough versions of gtk and glib, at least not the ones gimp developers say are needed. In the home repositories I looked at what they did is just compile with the older versions that come with openSUSE 12.1. It compiles… now one should ask himself why gimp developers say you need newer versions. If it crashes don’t complain…

As for 11.4. It came with even older versions of glib and gtk2, so…
