Best Linux Magazine? Why?

I’m interested in getting a subscription to a Linux magazine and I’ve read Linux Format and only one issue of Linux User & Developer. I’m not sure which might be a better magazine. What do you like?

I’ve been pretty happy with Linux Format over the years. They have some
stuff that’s good for beginners, and some stuff that’s good for more
advanced users.

The only downside (for me) has been the cost - it’s a UK magazine, and
I’m in the US, so shipping is pretty expensive. I’m looking to renew an
electronic-only subscription in the next few months.

The big plus for a physical subscription, though, is access to back
issues through their online archive. The current issue is 171, and their
archive goes back to issue 66. Access to the archives isn’t included
with the subscription through Google Play or Zinio (the latter of which
they don’t recommend).

I was thinking of doing a Zinio subscription. Do you know why they don’t recommend it? The Zinio version has more functionality than Google Play (you can click on table of contents, bookmark pages, click links - none of which google play can do).

Linux Format
But then I do some article for them so I’m biased I guess

From issue 171’s Q&A:

"Zinio is rubbish. It doesn’t work on Linux. We only continue to offer it
as an option because our paymasters do not understand this. In contrast,
Apple’s newsstand provides an excellent experience, with the obvious
caveat that it doesn’t work on Linux either. With this in mind, I’m not
surprised that your Newsstand subscription to Linux Journal works better
on your iPad than your Linux Format Zinio subscription worked on your
Fedora box.

In case it’s not clear, I strongly discourage anyone from subscribing via
Zinio."

I hadn’t tried the Google Play edition yet - but I’m surprised that it
has the limitations you’ve listed here.

sigh. That’s too bad. :frowning: On Android, Zinio far outclasses Google Play Magazines.

One question: what do they mean it doesn’t work on Linux? I can read all my zinio magazines in a web browser (both chrome and firefox work) and I’m on openSUSE. Do they have a desktop application?

It feels very much like a beta, put-together-last-minute app. It’s missing a lot of functionality that would make the magazines more useful to read. It’s also missing the ability to view the text of an article by itself as clear text. In Google Play, magazines are basically images. One small area where google play beats Zinio: you can search for terms in all magazines.

You’ve been so amazingly helpful that this sells it for me! Where can I find your article in the latest issue?

Yes, I believe that would be the desktop application - most useful for
reading offline.

Thanks, I may have to rethink my subscription choice - I was letting my
physical subscription expire and going to switch to the Play
subscription, though that doesn’t help me with my preferred reading
platform (a Nook classic).

Linux Format For me. They have a good mix of articles. The flavour is serious but light-hearted so is easy and pleasant to read cover to cover. The Dvd’s offer you the option to test other distros without downloading them. All in all 10 out of 10. But it is pricey even in UK £6.49. Still I never miss an issue!

I feel** Linux Format is the best Linux Magazine (and I don’t write for them either). I also like LinuxUser, Admin and Linux Magazine Pro**. I prefer my mags in print, don’t have to worry about dropping them in the toilet, where I do some of my best reading, not in the toilet, but on it. of course. It seems like the UK is where the best stuff comes from and in the US, most mags at the news stands are a month old already by the time I get to read them. It does not deter me from buying them and always looking for the next bash script idea.

Thank You,

thanks, I feel good about going with Linux format.

I write for them infrequently as my work permits. I am authoring an article about grub2 for an up coming issue.

TMI!!

Can’t wait!

It’s in the latest issue LXF 174 page 78>81

That must be the September 2013 issue, correct? I see that #173 for August is out now.

Thank You,

Yes
But mine arrived already. It may take longer for you in the US if they
actually ship them out.

I usually got my issues before the month came along that was on the
cover. But that was a subscription - buying them in the bookstore, you
usually have to wait until the month on the cover.
