Best file system for external USB drives?

I’ve just installed 11.2 on my XP box (AMD 5200+ 64bit processor, 2GB ram) with the intention of removing XP once everything is working properly with 11.2.

I have a couple of external USB HDDS hanging off the box for backup and media storage purposes. These drives are basically permanently attached to the PC. At the moment they are formated as Fat32 but I’m sure there’s a better file system that I could use

Is ext4 suitable? I’m looking for the most efficient, quickest and reliable file system. I don’t want the CPU maxing out while transferring large (~8GB isos) files to and from the USB HDDs.

It should do well with ext3 or 4
It should also be easy enough to experiment too.
Personally I would do my formatting from a Live CD like Parted Magic. And I would assign a volume ID/Label to each
eg: STORE
or BACKUP_DATA

I didn’t google around … (forgive me!!!) is ext4 “manageable” from Windows? (…talking about usb drives …)

I use ntfs (ntfs-3g package) because then there’s
no issues (other than it uses fair amounts) of
cpu) connecting it to xp/vista/win7 if the need
ever arises. FYI - fat32 maxes out @ 4gb for
individual files. Also there are windows tools to
access ext3 but not sure about ext4 (especially
with extents enabled)

openSuse 11.32 x64bit, KDE4.3.3, Opera weekly

Ok thanks. I’ll go for ext4 then and see how it goes.

Not yet, the 3rd party ext3 driver available for Windows will not be able to read a true ext4 file systems with extents turned on
