tried latest compat-wireless driver from linuxwireless.org &
realtek. can’t get it to associate with AP or get an ip
address. had to resort to ndiswrapper to get it working,as
the ethernet port is a bit dodgy on this laptop.

things i’ve tried :-

1 ) change to on boot for wireless & manual for wired
2 ) tried ifup method
3 ) realtek drivers from realtek site
4 ) compat-wireless from linuxwireless.org
5 ) adding default route
6 ) manual iwconfig to set device up
7 ) changed wireless channel ( been through the whole list )
8 ) changed from wpa-psk to wep to no security
9 ) disabled firewall on laptop & router
10 ) tried static ip

none seem to get a connection. i can see my router & others around me.
Cannot connect to any networks, tried my neighbours ( as i set it up
for them,they were very obliging ) & nada,zip,zilch,zero. no connection
whatsoever. looked through dmesg & saw time-outs when trying to
connect,so set the time out to longer,no connection.network manager
says it is configuring the device & then nothing.checked
/var/log/messages,no requests for firmware.
any help would be a boon, thanks in advance

Obviously, the shotgun approach doesn’t work. I have no experience with the
rtl8180, but the driver should work. As long as you can see your AP in an iwlist
scan, you should be able to connect.

Start with no encryption, the least used channel in your neighborhood from the
set 1, 6, 11, and NetworkManager. Create a new connection for your ESSID. You
failed to specify which version of openSUSE that you use, thus I cannot give you
specific details. If the connection still does not work, then check the dmesg
output for any clues. You should also post the output of ‘sudo /usr/sbin/iwlist
scan’.

Any errors that show in /var/log/NetworkManager? Do you have wpa_supplicant
installed? Even without encryption, I think NM calls it.

that’s what i get. If you were a bit closer, i’d send you the spare one i
have ( got 2 in a sale,identical models ) so you might puzzle it out. I’m
fast running out of ideas too. I even tried wicd to see if it was a problem
with network manager & get the same results. Thanks for being helpful &

Did you generate your own kernel? If so, you need the following configuration
variables:

CONFIG_RFKILL=m
CONFIG_RFKILL_LEDS=y
CONFIG_RFKILL_INPUT=y

same as before, think i’ll just use a bigger hammer on the device.Did a
clean install to make sure nothing was interfering.Did not work with kernel
driver. Downloaded latest compat-wireless,compiled & installed,same results.
could not connect to router,just sat there trying to “configure device”.
looks like my bargain sale was a “lemon”, will now go out & purchase another
device,preferrably not with rtl chipset.
