BEGINNER :(

Hi everyone well my name is Jon im new to open suse i wana know exactly how to use opensuse i have so many questions idk where to even begin
How do you open Ipv4?
why do people use Opensuse?
I hope theres someone good out there to help me out :frowning:

IPv4 is an internet protocol - are you sure you donā€™t actually want to know how to disable IPv6
Disable IPv6 - openSUSE Forums

We use openSUSE because we love it, it works, it makes us happyā€¦ whateverā€¦

I think many of us, if not all here, use OpenSUSE because we choose to, we like it and we feel more secure with it. Linux in general is not Windows. The difference between Windows and Linux is something like the difference between cars and trains. Both are forms of transportation, both get you where you want to go, but they do it a little different then the other.

From what I have seen in this forum, there is a lot of help. Even if you donā€™t get an answer by someone right away just searching the forum or checking out the wiki can many times give you the answer you need.

Welcome and Have Fun

Welcome to our forum.

Here is a link to a basic openSUSE concepts page for some general reading: http://en.opensuse.org/Concepts

I donā€™t know what you meant by ā€œopeningā€ IPv4 (maybe you meant disable IPv6).
as for why we use opensuse, well, myself, I searched a distro that looks beatiful from boot up through shutdown, that works and that doesnā€™t look B/W, and OpenSUSE fits perfectly.

I use SUSE because when i made the change from windows to linux SUSE was the first distro i tried and I have never changed it is the most secure and the best supported distro available today, and it is the only distro " I FEEL" that blows windows out of the water so to speak. i can do everything windows can do and i am running SUSE 11.1 with KDE 4 .

Because it offers me the software that enables me to do my job far more effectively than any other software available and I donā€™t get the hassles certain other software creates for their users.

Hey Jon, for me I chose openSUSE because I didnā€™t get well with ubuntu, which is, I think, the most popular linux distribution but I kinda thank god I didnā€™t because now Iā€™m loving SUSE!

And hereā€™s why I didnā€™t choose openSUSE 1st, well I saw openSUSE for the first time on my ā€œuniā€ professorā€™s laptop which made think, hmmmā€¦ And then one my buddies told me that openSUSE is for oldies and people who really just want to get the job done which isnā€™t bad, and then he told me about ubuntuā€¦I guess you can tell what happened next.

Hope youā€™ll enjoy it even more than me

Hi, I think Iā€™m as lost as you. I would ask for a section only for begginers like us in the forum (maybe is already and havenā€™t found yet, hehe). I donā€™t like to bother people about simple questions wich became complicated for begginers.

Try asking an intelligent question in a new thread, you might be surprised.

I probably use openSuse or any Linux distro because I love the look and I love the fact that I can make it look like with whatever I want it to be without spending a dime on software, or some spy-ware infested, third-party app to satisfy my lust of a fantastic looking desktop.

Glad you posted the way you did.

Continue to ask and check around the subjects you wish to learn more about in these forums. Learn how others put the questions in and notice how many receive reply as well as how many view the question.

What you will find will be a skill that when viewing others will become natural for you as wellā€¦Keep this in mind. Unlike Windows, this is a Community where there is a lot of sharing informationā€¦Most information will come from a lot of people who have gone through the Windows thing withā€¦Well not a great Community or MS Supportā€¦

Why Linux? Why this ā€œopenSuSeā€? This sure brings out a lot of emotionsā€¦
The most advancements in computing have come from these Communities of ā€œOpen Sourceā€ and today in NY Times-Tech section is an article that over 50% of Browserā€™s used today is ā€œFirefoxā€
This SuSe Linux has one of the best ā€œState of The Artā€ Operating System that MS could only dream ofā€¦

To make shortā€¦ā€œCloud computingā€ is beginning to emerge using the ā€œOpen Sourceā€ concept and MS is behind the curveā€¦MS has a huge problem with a intrusive Virus called ā€œCornbusterā€(name??) that threatens this new technology and this can only be found on Windows operating systems.

Learn as you go and rest assured that you will be ahead of the curve.
Have fun ā€¦tom

Why openSuse??
I tried Ubuntu and instantly HATED it!
All that guff about gimpy gibbons, hairy hippies, fruity fairies, The faux-African theme, the HORRIBLE brown colours, the fact that it refused to play with my perfectly ordinary graphics set-up, I felt physically sick after a week and banished the horrid disease from my computer, never to be visited again. After some months in rehab, I nervously attempted an openSuse Live CDā€¦
Instant love at first sight (the relationship, like most, has been through some ups and downs, but we are still together!)
Perhaps I prefer stuff built by German Engineers.rotfl!rotfl!rotfl!
