Beginner needs some advice

Yo all!
Maybe this topic already exist but still i was too lazy to search lol. So…Till now I was a Debian 5 (Lenny) and Ubuntu user but I thought I should try something else now so I choose the dist what I used first of all, suse. This was ages ago, maybe my teachers tried to teach it in school…anyways i really wana give it a try but i would like to hear a few advice’s, what usefull programs install first or how to make compiz run etc. U know basic things :slight_smile:

I would gently suggest that if you aren’t ready to search forums you’re probably not ready to use linux either.

Problem with not searching is it wastes the people answering you’s time, and wastes anyone who searches in future’s time, because they’ll keep coming across the same answers in different threads - much better to keep things together. Laziness like this is self defeating; it pollutes the forum, making it harder, in the end, for everyone - including the lazy - to find what they want.

Search, and if you have further questions, ask in the threads that are already there; if you genuinely can’t find what you’re looking for, start a thread. If you don’t want to follow these simple rules that make everyone’s lives easier, there are other distros that are quite happy for you not to…

Some people sometimes just don’t have the time I’ve been there done that, when I do have time I do run searches.
As to the suggestions you asked for:
1.when you get the chance uninstall Beagle
2.If you choose to use KDE as your desktop use 4.2 for now
3.Only use the VLC repos for libdvdcss, then remove it
4.If you want VLC use the Packman version
Those are the important ones Have a lot of fun as they say.

Brassy does have a point though. Searching the forums for such a general topic that’s been answered ad nauseam will probably take one a lot less time than signing up, creating a new topic, and typing a message. Heck, there are even sticky posts at the tops of the forums to answer these questions.

I can see 3-4 hours of searching for a difficult, technical question, but simple setup? I’d say 5-10 minutes.

I don’t mean this post to be offensive towards anyone, I just don’t like blatant laziness. And that’s all I will say on that. :slight_smile:

Another suggestion I would have in to disable the installation DVD repository under YaST:

  1. Open YaST
  2. Enter root password when prompted
  3. Open Software Repository
    under the Software heading 1. Click on the openSUSE 11.1-0
    repository 1. Uncheck the Enabled
    button 1. Click the OK
    button

Now YaST won’t check for the packages on the installation DVD every time you start the installer.

Isn’t it rather undiplomatic of you to admit that you are too lazy to search? At least you got some answers. You will never find about the other people who read your post and thought meh if the guy’s too lazy, why should I bother? Sounds counterproductive for you to have admitted it. :stuck_out_tongue:
