Battery not detected, /proc/acpi/battery missing?

I’m running openSUSE 10.3, with KDE 3.5.

Whenever I run my laptop on batteries, kpowersave shows “Running on batteries – -1% charged”

I examined the /proc/acpi directory, but there is no “battery” directory there.

What’s happening here? How can I get kpowersave to report the battery level correctly?

Thanks!

did you start with ACPI=OFF maybe?
Does “lsmod | grep battery” show a loaded battery module?

Answers…

  • acpi=off – not true; checked /proc/cmdline to make sure
  • lsmod | grep battery; missing.

I did “modprobe battery” and that made the /proc/acpi/battery directory appear, but completely empty.

I unloaded and reloaded kpowersave, but still got the same “-1% charged” message.

Thanks!

which hardware are we talking about? (brand, model)

Hi!

It’s a MSI VR601.

What bothers me, is that when I installed openSUSE on it, some months ago, it showed the battery level correctly… and of course, I didn’t (knowingly) try to stop that !

Did you upgrade the BIOS, maybe?
Else I guess I’d simply reinstall. No idea how to troubleshoot that in an efficient way.

OK, I installed the 2.6.25 kernel, and everything went back to normal!
