I’m having a few problems with my Creative Zen and Banshee after swapping computers and upgrading to openSUSE 11.2. At first I was having problems because it wouldn’t detect, but that seems to be about resolved now (although I do sometimes have to unmount it in Nautilus then disable and re-enable the MTP extension in Banshee at the moment). Now the problem appears to be that it’ll transfer, but that the tracks won’t play.
I’m using Banshee 1.5.2 with a custom build with this MTP on 64-bit patch added. I manually manage the device (I’ve got 10GB of music and an 8GB player, so I use a smart playlist that I manually sync with) and have been testing with just a few tracks at once - MP3 and M4A (iTunes+). Tracks generally copy over okay (although one MP3 in particular seems to freeze during transfer) but when I try to play them I get “There is a problem playing this audio”.
I’ve tried Gnomad, but the tracks didn’t show up at all, and I’ve tried Rhythmbox, but it doesn’t sync album art, even for tracks I know it has the art for.
Anyone had similar experiences or have any ideas? I’ve had all of these songs on there before, so it is annoying that it isn’t working now.
Have you considered using windows in Virtual Box. I know several who do this to simplify issues like this. If you don’t mind me mentioning it.
I could use Windows, and I know that syncing works fine from my wife’s Vista laptop, but I’d rather get Banshee syncing properly since I use it as my main music app anyway. If nothing else I can always stay in Linux and use Rhythmbox, since it seems to synch the files okay, but again it isn’t Banshee where all of my settings, songs and playlists are.
Odder and odder…and seemingly just a Banshee issue now I’ve tested it more.
One track definitely upsets Banshee with the transfer - nothing crashes and there aren’t any errors, but it will never progress beyond that one track and it’ll never cancel the transfer or quit either.
Other tracks copy and complete, but don’t play. If I then use Rhythmbox then it won’t overwrite songs, but it will add extra songs. If I add one song from an album via Banshee then I get the album art, and if I add the rest via Rhythmbox then I get playable tracks. Not ideal, but a real last resort until I find a fix.
I’ve also done a bit more poking with Gnomad and found that this time it did copy things across (although again, no art work). I’ve not knowingly changed anything since it didn’t work, but it did this time and the tracks play.
I’m wondering whether MTP tags the track types in anyway. Could it be that Banshee is copying the data but not quite marking them right? Maybe I need to ask on the Banshee mailing lists if this is looking more and more like a Banshee issue rather than a SUSE library/app combination issue.
For the 846th time, sorry about the double-post, but editing time has run out.
I’ve dug around the OBS and found Banshee alpha, which is at v1.5.3. Synching has improved slightly as I can now auto-sync with a playlist rather than my whole library (hurrah!) but it still hits the “cannot play audio” problem after it is copied when I try to play.
Time to ask the Banshee people, me thinks.
