Not so happy w/ amarok these days, though I like it.
But I keeps crapping out at random points in a playlist.
(I’ve got a 75Gb+ 15yr collection of mostly.flac and .mp3 files so playlists are fairly large)
I’ve used amarok for years and been through troubleshooting it and growing with it, but it’s tiresome at this point.
I want a player that just plays for hours while I’m working and amarok just won’t do so with any regularity…so I’m wanting to try out Sonata.
I have installed it as well as mpd and several dependencies and so far I can “start” Sonata from the menu and it opens up.
Now… how the heck do I get it to play something?
I found some info, but reading the project home page and random websites about Sonata has frankly been very little help so far.
Some post somewhere said to run the System Services (runlevel) module in YaST which I did, and I can see that mpd is “enabled” but not running.
When I try to refresh/start it there, this error is thrown:
/etc/init.d/mpd start returned 1 (unspecified error):
Can anybody advise what I need to do to get mpd running so that Sonata works?
This is one of the most cryptic/weakly documented processes I think I’ve run into w/ openSuSE, but it may well work nicely if I can get it configured.
I did not install from that repo, I used the packman repo.
But installing isn’t the issue.
I’m too ignorant to figure out how to actually use it now that it’s installed.

When I start up the Sonata GUI, it’s just blank, no list of audio files is shown. Searching doesn’t seem to accomplish anything.
I’m not a novice user, but this has me baffled. That said, I’m no expert either. I don’t really KNOW all that much, but I take instruction well.
I’m going to go ahead and experiment with Tomahawk, but Sonata’s got me curious now about just what I’m “not getting”.

There seems to be a German article that can help you.
Excellent. I only wish I could read it in German. The translator works just fine, I just wish I knew more than just a few random German words and phrases…
I’ve traveled to Bavaria and spent some time in Nuremberg working with colleagues living in Schwarzenbruck, Feucht, etc and was lucky enough to be there for Christkindlesmarkt one year. I have family links and have always had an appreciation for things German.
I should mention for anyone following my query re: Sonata in the future that I understand now that the key to Sonata is MPD and it’s configuration.
