backlight problem

hello!
i have a problem with the backlight on my laptop. after a while after i turn on my computer, it just goes like 50% of the intensity. i checked the power management settings, i tried using no batteries, just AC power. the backlight does this even if i am using the computer, so i guess that it’s not a power setting problem.
i have open suse 11.3, an IBM T40p laptop, with ATI video card(64 MB).
edit: another thing is that sometimes the backlight fades after 1 minute, or after 5 minutes, or it doesn’t fade at all.

So I don’t have this laptop, but I found that the manual controls on my Dell laptop keyboard still work and it allowed me to get full brightness without regard to power settings.

It is worth a try.

Thank You,

the keys that control the backlight work just fine, until the problem occurs, after that point it doesn’t do what they’re supposed to.
this evening, i turned on the computer, and after 2 min the backlight faded. i logged out, logged in, and now it’s working fine(it’s been like 30 min or so since i logged in the last time).

do you have a live CD, or maybe a dual boot to another operating system?

i ask because while it might be something wrong with your OS (which
you didn’t name, btw) the VERY RANDOM nature of your symptoms points
me to suspecting a hardware (or BIOS) problem…perhaps heat related…

if your is a laptop more than a year old with a dog, cat, rabbit, or
smoker (or two/more) in the house you might just be needing to clean
out the air passageways…or just dump out the chicken bones…

check your manufacturers web site for cleaning instructions (and, read
my caveat below) because it IS possible to destroy your laptop trying
to clean to solve heat problems…

on the other hand, if it runs great with another OS then it is
probably not a . . .

When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

i’m currently using a dual boot windows xp and open suse 11.3.
on windows this problem doesn’t exist, and i just realized that if i restart open suse the problem doesn’t apper anymore. so it only happens once i start open suse, but after i log out and then log in it doesn’t happen… that confuses me a lot…
i’ve also had ubuntu 9.04 installed and it neither had the backlight problem…

hmmm…that ubuntu has a different kernel than the latest
openSUSE…you didn’t say but am i to guess you are using 11.3?

if so, there have been two or three kernel upgrades since it came out…

and, any or none of those kernels might work correctly, or not…

take a look though some of these, for hints: http://tinyurl.com/29sx79a
