I did a previous search before coming here, and I found some alternatives but in very old threads. Though, one of the most mentioned was one called StarDict. What do you think about this one? Is it still good nowadays or are there other alternatives? Thanks.
I suspect most people just use Google for translation. There are plenty of conventional online dictionaries if you want a conventional lookup.
I use QStarDict. For me it’s useful. I think you can even install on it Babylon dictionaries.
You can try. It’s for free!
Or just use the ordinary Stardict, it is very nice!
And what’s the difference between StarDict and QStarDict, besides the language they’re written on?
Just the graphical interface I believe, QStardict uses qt, KDEish, while Stardict uses gtk which is what Gnome uses, (as you mentioned).
So if you use KDE you could try QStardict. If on Gnome, use Stardict, (for the sake of limit packages installed).
Perhaps QStardict has some limitations, don’t know?
I use KDE and Stardict.
Installed StarDict and StarDict Tools. But now I don’t know how to convert Babylon .bgl files to StarDict dictionaries. StarDict’s site says “You can convert any babylon .bgl file to StarDict by the bgl2txt tool, just download stardict-tools package, compile it, then “./bgl2stardict.py a.bgl”.” StarDict version is 3.0, so it should support it. But in StarDict’s directory (usr/share/stardict-tools) there’s no “bgl2stardict.py” object. I don’t know how to convert by openning the editor itself, and another program called “dictconv” which I found after another search isn’t in YaST.
Can someone help, please? Thanks.
Update: reason I’m lost with StarDict Tools editor is it doesn’t seem to do its job.
From available options in lower part of editor’s window -Tab, BGL, Babylon- I select BGL, browse for my .bgl Babylon dictionary and click “Build”. It just says “Done!” but no .babylon file is generated, neither in the directory original BGL is nor stardict-tools’ directory, unless editor stored the new file somewhere else and I needed to search better, but I doubt it… With that .babylon file I’d just select Babylon option in editor and browse for the newly created .babylon file, which would generate the StarDict native dictionary files. It may all be easier with bgl2stardict.py script, but it’s not in StarDict-tools corresponding directory…
Curious thing in Windows:
I downloaded StarDict-editor for Windows, which is only an exe and it’s the exact same editor of Linux StarDict-tools, realized it needed GTK+ package installed in order to work and installed its most recent version. StarDict-editor crashed when trying to generate the .babylon file.
Uninstalled GTK and installed and older version of it (2.6.10). This time it was successful and generated the file in the same directory StarDict-editor was, with the same message “Done!” displayed. But when trying to convert from .babylon to StarDict dictionary it displays “Error, no end line 2: 244”, “Done!”, and no files are generated.
Any help about all this? Or could it be that StarDict project is kind of discontinued?
