Avoid buggy system when not properly shut down

I have an old Mac Mini where I’ve installed Opensuse 13.1 “minimal x system”. My goal is to install a plex media server and use the Mac Mini in my car to stream movies to the children’s ipads.

How can I avoid that the system becomes buggy when I shut down the car engine and the Mac Mini will be powered off without a proper shutdown procedure?

It won’t become “buggy” (ie, it won’t have bugs introduced into the
system), but it may well become unstable.

A few options:

  1. Mount the filesystems read-only, and have the logs written to a tmpfs
    or ramdisk.

  2. Use a battery backup of some sort to keep it running, then detect
that it’s on battery and do a clean shutdown.

  3. Do a clean shutdown manually before you turn the car off.
