Automount with fixed Mountpoints

Hi experts,

I’m running 11.2 (KDE 4.3.4) and I would like to change the naming of the mountpoints from automounted devices (memory sticks, pen drives, DVDs).

I was a happy user of OpenSuse 11.0 before and I know the options how this could be achived on older OpenSuse releases like:

  • usage of /usr/share/hal/fdi/95userpolicy/
  • submitting “sysinfo:/” in konqueror and customizing the mountpoint by right-clicking on the device.

Now it looks that none of them works anymore for OpenSuse 11.2.
I’m quite disappointed but the lack of transparency how this works on 11.2/KDE 4.x. BTW: Who is responsible for this mount process, KDE or HAL, and if it’s KDE: what is the user interface for it which compares to Konqueror and the sysinfo:/ screen?

Please don’t try to convince me that the current way of mouting by usage the volume label is the most reasonable one…

Would like to have the “old” way: just to see a dvd popping up under /media/dvd regardless how the volume label looks like…

Thanks for help

I’m going to tell what you don’t want to hear :stuck_out_tongue:
Give your usb device a volume label Eg; MyUSB
and SuckyUSB

then they will always mount /media/MyUSB
/media/SuckyUSB

I am not sure if I understand what you did before to change mountpoints.

What I can tell you is that on an other thread we found out that this action of mounting of devices connected “live” is not any more done by HAL, but by DeviceKit-disks. I have had no time until now to start a new study on how this works or can be configured, but feel free

I’ve been using this method for ages now. Just like to add that you need a windu system to label FAT partitions.

You can do it in Virtual Box XP on a Linux Host. I did one like this earlier today.

Thanks hcvv for pointing me to DeviceKit-disks.

Yes, it looks that this move from 11.2 towards Devicekit and the early stage of KDE integration by Solid/libudev is limiting my options to get removable discs mounted at desired places (don’t want to think of the customization of special mount-options for certain devices)

After searching the web on this topic I must say that I’m quite disappointed how early DeviceKit got adopted by OpenSuse and other distros…
In comparison to OpenSuse 11.0 / KDE 3.5 I’m also missing the features of the KDE applet (device control) to manage removable media. Besides the mountpoint It differentiated between
(a) mounting/unmounting a device
(b) ejecting media
(c) mounting without necessarily starting an application

Hmmhh, let’s see how things are envolving … ;-(
