Automount optical drives/usb drives with specific group access permissions

Hi,

Have been using opensuse for about 6 years, but this is first post/plea for help.

I use a linux box as a file server running samba. Recently I have tried to share my DVD drive and USB drives as a samba share. The problem is that even if I share /media directory (and so can see the DVD/USB drive on the client machine) I always get an access denied warning if I try to access the share. Looking at the DVD/USB drive access permissions on the Linux server shows that the devices are automounted with read/write access only for the local user on the Linux server, which does not allow access for any of remote clients. Ideally I would want to mount with read/write access given to my samba group.

I have searched in vain for a solution to this. I have found references to fstab, hal and polkit, though not sure what if anything I should be doing with these. I am running opensuse 12.1 with kde. Iwould like to keep the automount function as obviously client machines cannot mount the DVD/USB drive once it is inserted into the server.

Cheers,
ben

Have a look at this message thread (#4 looks good) which you may find useful: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/hardware/473592-where-default-permissions-ownership-removable-media-opensuse-12-1-a.html
