i’ve never done any side by side comparisons of KDE vs Gnome, but i
believe it is generally known (and true) that KDE is larger in code
(therefore fills more RAM) and obviously would take a few cycles more
to run all the code through the processor (and, yes would therefore
burn one more drop of fuel to power it)…but, i’ve not noticed much
difference in how long it take me to write an mail, as the system is
usually waiting on me to do my typing
of course, i don’t run desktop effects or compiz in either, as i’m
interested in doing stuff and not just sitting around wanting to be
wowed by spinning cubes, etc…so, if you are into glitz and whiz
your experience might be different from mine…
i’m still using KDE3 with i believe is supposed to be slower than
KDE4, but i’ve never done a side by side comparison between those either…
just download a 11.3 live CD with KDE and have a look at it…play
with it for some days…see if you like it…of course it WILL boot,
load and run faster from your hard drive than from the CD…so
remember that as you are tying it…the only way to give KDE a fair
shot that way would be to also download the 11.3 Gnome live CD and run
it for comparison…or install both, which is also possible…
use what works for you…openSUSE Gnome, openSUSE KDE, openSUSE XFCE,
openSUSE LXDE etc etc etc…or Ubuntu.
