I have a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M-series laptop, 40 GB HDD 1.6 Ghz Intel Centrino, DVD/CD-R(W), and Intel 2100 wireless. I had 11.1 of Suse installed and I recently got my hands on 11.2. The issue is every time I try to install and the Automatic Configuration begins, everything freezes, except for the mouse movement. I tried doing the manual configuration, but that froze as well. I have to switch the power off and when I get back to selection of boot options, I selected ‘Boot from hard drive’. A window then comes and says ‘the previous installation has failed, Would you like to continue?’ Clicking ‘yes’ causes it to freeze again and now will not let me get into Suse with my log in, only root. This has been an ongoing struggle for me for too long now. Any ideas? Don’t get me wrong, 11.1 is good and all, but why settle for less when you can have better if the computer will allow it?
Did you try to do fresh install or an upgrade? In both cases I would recommend to check if the alternative installation modes (different ACPI/APIC/APM settings) help. You can find the description for that under Novell Doc: Start-Up - The Boot Screen. Look for the “F5 Kernel” part.
Tried both, update and fresh. Neither was able to get me in under my own log in, only root. As root, the grub locks up on contact with the mouse. I will try in acpi disabled install and see what happens.
i think it is probably easier to just use your backup image to restore
back to the working 11.1
see, what you said “why settle for less when you can have better if
the computer will allow it?” assumes your machine will allow it,
assumes it will run 11.2, a fact that you have not yet proven…
so, good thing you can go back…

but that still does not solve this issue. If others have 11.2 on the same exact computer, then I should as well. 11.1 has its flaws as well, and though I can still get into it, there are many issues that still linger within that irritate me, such as issues with python. I know that those are smaller issues, but I do have 11.2 on my desktop and it seems more ‘reliable’ to me when it is working right. Going back to 11.1 only makes this thread useless for me and for any others who are having the same issue as I am with 11.2 Suse.
@thallma: I tried no apic install and it installed on the first try. Thanks! Hopefully everything runs well from now on. Thanks for the great reply to this problem and sending me in the right direction!

not if you log a bug report…then use 11.1 until the problem is
solved…see, finding a work around here won’t get the problem solved,
just the symptom avoided…
on the other hand, if you are sure others don’t have the same problem
with “the same exact computer” then you have to consider these thoughts:
-unlike the other “same exact computers” you have a hardware fault
(did you run run the install DVD’s “Firmware Test” prior to install?)
-your install media is corrupted (did you md5sum check the iso and
then do this prior to the install: http://tinyurl.com/yajm2aq)
-and, 11.2 reliability on your desktop is no proof it will be on
another machine…as you and thousands of others have proven…
now i didn’t write you shouldn’t keep trying…what i wrote was “it
is probably easier to”…but, if you had rather take your machine out
of service while waiting here for someone to provide the solution, go
for it…
have you logged the bug yet? well, i guess first you should check your
install media and hardware…also wouldn’t hurt to run mentest overnight…
