Authentication problem?

Okay,

I need help getting my laptop connected to my wireless network.

I have a Netgear WN2000RPT wireless extender with access control (MAC address)
and WPA-PSK+WPA2-PSK enabled.

My laptop is a Dell Precision 4600 with Suse 12.2

Here’s the kicker. If I turn off the security options meaning WPA-PSK+WPA2-PSK
but access control enabled (MAC address control), I get an IP and connect just
fine. However, with security enabled… the network manager hangs at waiting
for authentication… And yes I’m pretty sure I have the passphrase the same on
both the extender and laptop.

How can I identify what the problem is (driver?, WPA_supplicant?, etc?) and
fix?

Although a high percentage of such problems is due to an incorrect secret, yours
is OK. That is shown with the successful authentication and association above.

Some device has gotten a Zero Configuration Address and is broadcasting. That
probably isn’t serious, although any extraneous traffic will reduce the
throughput that is already reduced by the use of a repeater. Windows is noted
for getting into that situation.

Is it possible for you to move your laptop to a position where you can reach the
AP directly without going through the repeater? Does WPA2 work in that case?
That will help prove that wpa_supplicant is OK.

Well lwfinger,

Here’s the odd thing. I came in tonight to execute your suggestion… and the laptop wireless is now connected to the wireless extender!!! IP… nameserver… everything??? Very peculiar. I haven’t changed anything since yesterday and tried multiple times to connect.

BTW I have multiple other devices connect to both the main wireless and extender so this isn’t the first time i’ve done this.

I guess this is great news… but I’d sure like predictability out of my system.
