Audio

Hi,

After my first online update in 11.1, some of my audio capability went missing. In particular, my Skype mic stopped working. In an attempt to get it working, I replaced all Pulse audio components with ESound.

But, now, nothing works! Kaffeine won’t even load:

Loading of player part ‘XinePart’ failed. All audio drivers failed to initialize!

I tried un-/reinstalling Kaffeine from the repos, thinking it would load all dependencies. But, it didn’t. I also tried reinstalling all the Pulse stuff. No luck there either. Can anyone please tell me what is needed here? Is there a pattern for this?

Thanks.

There is no problem with Kaffeine keep it installed. The only problem is with PulseAudio grrr :expressionless: I’m uninstalled all PusleAudio packages and installed xine with the kde-codecs.ymp
Skype is working, players are working. There is no need for PulseAudio - I don’t know why it’s installed by default… The users are mostly having problems with this and with k3b, everything was fine with Alsa.

Thanks ram88. I removed all Pulse Audio components and installed xine. Now Kaffeine works again. But the Skype mic still doesn’t work.

Furthermore, the sound icon in YaST has disappeared, so I can’t configure my sound card. And Alsa Mixer is also gone. How do I get it back?

This Update is really botched! I’m just glad I have Windows XP as a standby.

Hey, it OK. The sound settings are also disappeared for me after deleting PulseAudio. After I’m just updated my xinelib?! and everything was fine. I have these alsa packages installed:

alsa-plugins-1.0.18-6.12
alsa-1.0.18-8.7
alsa-oss-1.0.17-1.37
alsa-utils-1.0.18-6.4
alsa-firmware-1.0.17-1.42

and these xine packages:

libxine1-codecs-1.1.16.1-0.pm.0
xinetd-2.3.14-129.28
libxine1-1.1.16.1-0.pm.0
phonon-backend-xine-4.1.3-71.3
libxine1-gnome-vfs-1.1.16.1-0.pm.0

and I’m also deleted, added and reconfigured my sound card.

Thanks. I was missing alsa-plugins. Unfortunately, installing it didn’t bring back alsamixer:

linux:~ # alsamixer
ALSA lib conf.c:3009:(snd_config_update_r) Cannot access file /etc/alsa-pulse.co nf
ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL default

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

And the sound icon in YaST didn’t reappear. Needless to say, the Skype mic still doesn’t work.
