Audio stopped working today.

As the title says, my audio is not working as of today. I’m not sure what caused it, but I know it’s not a hardware problem, as I booted a Kubuntu LiveCD and its audio worked fine.

Here’s recent things I’ve done:

  • Cleaned the dust out from the computer. At first I suspected this may have caused a loose connection, but as I said, it turned out not to be a hardware issue.
  • Installed VLC 1.0 and Firefox 3.5, for which I added the mozilla repository and the appropriate repository from videolan.org.
  • Installed libpurple-facebook from jhaygood’s 11.1 repository.

Also, looking at my repositories I notice I have oss, non-oss, and update. What purpose does /update serve that isn’t met by the others? (I know from experience that having too many repositories can lead to trouble, but I think this one might be needed, not sure.)

The oss, non-oss, and update repos are all considered required for online openSUSE package installation and updating. In addition, many have the packaman repo enabled.

Have a read of this openSUSE AudioTroubleshooting guide first. It will show you how to diagnose the problem, and help you obtain any useful info that can be posted here for further help if required.

SOLVED: I’m an idiot. I forgot to turn the OSS master back up, duhr.

Operator error
