Audio Problem w/11.2 & Dell Studio 1536

After a clean install, my sound doesn’t work (speaker or headphone jack).

/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh
Newer version detected: 0.4.59
To view the ChangeLog, please visit git.alsa-project.org Git - alsa-driver.git/history - utils/alsa-info.sh
ALSA-Info script has been updated to v 0.4.59
Please re-run the script (I updated as requested by the command)

Can you try that script again please

Try this:

/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh --no-upload

then copy the contents of the file /tmp/alsa-info.txt and paste that contents into the web site New - Pastie and press ‘paste’ on that web site page, and then it will open a new page with the script contents. Copy the website/URL location/address from that page, and post here that URL!

Thankyou.

Do you have more than one headphone jack? Maybe you plugged your headphones into headphone1 which was muted?

Your speaker mixer control is at 0% for playback. That also guaranteed NO sound in speakers. I think you need to move up that volume control.

Done Deal: http://pastie.org/1000825

I right clicked sound and went to the mixer. The volumes are turned up. Am I in the wrong mixer?

Thanks. Before going further, please move UP the volume control for Speaker.

Maybe. What mixer are you using? KDE’s Kmix? If kmix, go to the menu in kmix (channels is the item I believe) and add the “speaker” volume control channel. Move its volume up!

That’s what I’m trying to tell you, the volumes are all up.

Question, am I using the correct mixer? I could be doing something totally different here.

I use Gnomes’ default sound mixer. The label is “Sound”, nothing else. There isn’t an “Alsa Mixer”, or PulseAudio Mixer", just “Sound”.

On a whim (and I know I should never do that), I installed the GUI for Alsa Mixer… it only sees the “PulseAudio” card.

Now I’m really confused.

I’m not a Gnome user.

I actually REALLY like the Gnome desktop. It looks great. It feels great. And it’s sound ??? Well, I’ve never had any luck with Gnome sound, and it forces me to fiddle to get to work right and I refuse to fiddle. Hence I don’t use Gnome.

You could read up on “amixer” and use that. Its a command line mixer.

Type:

man amixer

to get more information

Okay, so Gnome sound is quirky. Unfortunately, it’s what I have at this point (never had anything else so I don’t anything to compare it to).

I played with amixer here is some of the stuff I get:

Not sure where to go with this. It sure would be nice to have a fully functional OpenSuse 11.2 laptop.

I uninstalled amixer.

I turned off the HDMI audio/video interface.

I was thinking that it could be in conflict with the internal sound card.

In the mixer, I have the volume turned up… nothing.

Also, could there be a conflict with PulseAudio? There is a PulseAudio mixer as well as the Gnome mixer. Maybe could be an issue? I wouldn’t know how to tell.

I’m at the end of my rope. Please, someone has to know how to fix this.

Why? That makes no sense to me. If anything will help you here it is amixer. If you go changing things without understanding what you are doing, you could make it worse. ENSURE YOU PUT THINGS BACK after something does not work.

That syntax looks wrong to me.

How about something like:

amixer -c 1 cset numid=8,100%

or

amixer -c 0 cset numid=8,100%

I’m speculating, as I do NOT have to use amixer.

Did you also check out alsamixer ?

Plugged that in, none of it worked.

Am I SOL? Surely I’m not the only guy with a Dell Laptop running this OS with a sound problem!

Anyone, please?

kmix can run under gnome, it will bring in some KDE dependencies, but if I prefer it’s more “advanced” feel.

   sudo zypper install kmix

-then alt-F2 and run kmix
-Double click on the new speaker control in your system tray
-Select settings->configure channels
-Turn on at leasr Master, PCM, Speaker, and any headphones you have (I turn them all on)
-Adjust your levels and mute to your hearts content

After some geeking, and using the alsamixer cli, I get test sound but no other.

I had installed all of the multimedia codecs before all of this started… maybe I need to revisit it?

Still, might pull down kmix if you think it will work for me.

ok, good. Congratulations. Thats a good start!

Most likely.

A big mistake most new users make is they install applications from both videolan and packman, and that invariably causes problems as the packagers of those two repositories put the codecs in places the applications from the other two repos can not find. I always recommend users new to openSUSE stick with ONLY the follow 4 repos enabled: OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman and NO OTHERS! Adding others often causes new users problems. If you need an application from a 5th repository, add the repository, install the application, and remove the repository. That simple approach will save a new user a lot of difficulty in my experience.

You could look here and follow the suggestions in the 1st post of that thread: Check your multimedia problem in ten steps - openSUSE Forums

I did a few other things, and now have system sounds and the sound test works. The problem is that the settings for the alsamixer don’t save. How do I save them?

Secondary to that, once I’m able to save the settings and I have working system sounds and the test is okay… how do I install the appropriate codecs without screwing up the current settings?

These are the repositories I currently have:

11.2 OSS
11.2 Non-OSS
11.2 Debug (just removed)
11.2 Source (just removed)
11.2 Update
Packman
Libdvdcss (just removed)

Thanks sir… I appreciate your help.
