Audio Playback

Hi guys,

I’m still really new to Linux and love using Opensuse over a few other open source projects i’ve messed around with but i have a question on audio playback.

Coming from a windows machine at home i have loads of music in a couple of different formats, i have Apple Lossless for listening to music whilst at home and a similiar library in Apple AAC 256 which i use on the iPod.

Now i’m happy to not sync my iPod with my Opensuse laptop but i would like to transport a selection of both file types for listening on the laptop, i’ve followed all threads about installing gstreamer etc but nothing.

I’ve tried Banshee and Rhythmbox however when i install Amarok every file type played with no problems, and what i can’t work out is why?

I really dislike the layout of Amarok and as i use Gnome this might be the reason, but if the codecs are installed to play these file types via Amarok shouldn’t the other media players like Banshee and Rhythmbox work as well?

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Hi Gsus, (think I just got that!) If you haven’t already done so you need to enable the Packman Repositories. YAST is probably the best way to do this. Just select Software repositories; then from the next screen click add; then select Community Repositories from the next screen and then find Packman and accept.

Once you’ve done this from YAST select Software Management. Search for Rhythmbox and if it’s not installed select and install; all should then be fine. If not there will be a select box at the top asking if you want to select Packman software with a change of vendor. Go with this and accept. Reboot and you should be good to go. I have done this from memory so I hope my steps haven’t missed anything out.

The reason you couldn’t get Rhythmbox to work is that openSUSE “only” ships with free codecs. As supplying the capability of playing Proprietary codecs (such as mp3 and aac) could break laws of some countries. You may want to check the law where you live. The following link explains openSUSE’s viewpoint :

Hope this helps.

I have downloaded suse 11.2 and everything is working fine except when I try to play a cd in Banshee media player it plays but it sounds very loud and statically its not clear, what do I need to do to fix this problem?

Turn the master volume slider down

Turn the master volume slider down

In case this was not meant ironic, you got his point wrong…

jrouter, try looking for a channel called “Wave” in your preferred mixer and pull that down about a quarter, then the sound shouldn’t be distorted anymore. Depending on the used player (I haven’t worked with Banshee yet) you would have to fiddle a bit with the equalizer. I use xmms and the default EQ-settings are just ridiculous and even dangerous for my speaker.
