Not getting any errors that I know of (that doesn’t mean that I’m not getting any errors; it just means that if I am, I don’t know about them - I’m a relative beginner at Linux). Everything seems to be set right. Volume is adjusted to maximum in both the configuration settings and with the adjustment button on the Dell laptop itself. The laptop has a built-in speaker. But I’m not getting any sound.
Anyone have any ideas?
I’m running openSUSE 11.3 (upgrading is not an option so please don’t suggest anything related to upgrading to a newer release).
openSUSE 11.3 was released on 2010-07-15 with kernel 2.6.34 and support for that version ended at the start of this year. It hard to get help for an obsolete product and fewer comments still when you don’t want to hear about doing an upgrade. You could always tell us why doing an upgrade is out of the question. For more information on openSUSE releases, have a look here: openSUSE - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You have already 2 responses concerning the version and support, so I won’t comment on that further. Are you using KDE or Gnome? Did you try configuring/testing the sound card with YaST? Also, check that nothing is muted (inc sources).
