Audacity crash sound activated recording

Fully updated Leap 2.1, XFCE 4.12
Audacity (2.1.1) crashes when Sound Activated Recording is enabled and record is pushed.
Does anyone have any idea why, or what I might look into?

Can you please try to run audacity from the command line in order to see what really happens?

I don’t know also if it provides some sort of log file in /var/log, but you could check there as well.

Also: How did you install it?

audacity 2.1.1-96.2-x86_64 from Packman Repository

Would you try to install audacity from the official repositories for openSUSE 42.1 and see if that helps?

You can do that from the Software Management via YaST2: http://2.1m.yt/BqOk105.png

I removed the Packman package and installed audacity(x86-64) = 2.1.1-5.1 from the Leap 42.1 repository. It is still crashing.

Hmm I see now, I have tried to install audacity on my openSUSE, I activated that option you mentioned and I got the same problem as yours, However, when I set the “Sound Activated Recording” to “-60”, it worked with me just fine.

Now since it happened here too, I think you should file a bug report at the forums of audacity or their mailing list: http://www.audacityteam.org/contact/

I hope this helps.

keep all multimedia from packman
a simple googling you error suggests a missing portaudio, and the error also states that jack can not be found, do you have jack and portaudio if not install them, pulse is also the default audio server you should have that one too

zypper in jack portaudio pulseaudio

I’m not sure but you might need dbus installed for audacity to be able to talk to jack

zypper in dbus-1

could you post your repo’s as a bad repo might be preventing zypper from propper package managment

zypper lr -d

After reading your post I also set “Sound Activated Recording” to “-60”. No crash. If I set it to “-59”, it crashes.

Portaudio is installed. Another application (fldigi) uses portaudio.

Pulse audio is not listed as a dependency.

ALSA is installed as the sound server when XFCE is used in the distro installation. ALSA is selected in the Device preference.

libjackso.0 is listed as a dependency. It is installed.

The repositories I have used are Packman and standard opensuse. The crash happens with packages from both repositories.

did you do a full vendor change with packman?
if you didn’t do a full change you might have a crippeled package from OSS, all restricted/patented codecs are removed from the OSS packages.
there are 2 ways to do a vendor change, one is with yast, select the packman repo and click switch system packages, the other is with zypper,
the zypper way is easier but to tell you the command you need to do I need to know your repo’s as different people have different repo’s so what is the output of

zypper lr -d

post it here with

 tags (the **#** button)

I just updated Audacity back to Packman. I then used YAST to switch system packages to Packman. Audacity still crashes as described.

Output of zypper lr -d

While Audacity still crashes, switching system files seems to have fixed my problem with video file thumbnails

zypper dup --from 2

will get all media packages from packman

You don’t need repo 6 it never updates

zypper rr 6

This is supposedly a known bug in audacity 2.1.1. It has supposedly been fixed in 2.1.2, I guess I have to wait until opensuse and/or Packman updates the package.

Does anyone know how I should put in a request to Packman to update?

You can ask them via the mailing list or the IRC channel:

http://packman.links2linux.org/help

Thank you

I have tried to compile audacity 2.1.2. The compile stopped with the following error:

Anyone know how I might fix that?

We put a lot of work into upgrading the key wxWidgets library we use from version 2.8.12 to version 3.0.2. This fixes many bugs in Audacity on Linux. Thanks particularly to Martin Steghöfer, Leland Lucius, David Avery.
