attention NNTP users

if you notice the http side not working today:

the following is currently showing at the top of each web forum page,
but has heretofore not been announced to the non-web users:

“The forum software will be upgraded Thursday, May 16th . This will
require the web interface to our forums be offline for about 60
minutes. The NNTP interface will not be affected. If you find the
forums offline, wait a while and try again. We apologize for the
inconvenience.”

further: there is info on this maintenance on
http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Downtime which says the window for
this operation is (probably) Thursday, 08:00 - 10:00 CET and “Major
Maintenance that is believed to be completed during the Window but
are taking longer than expected will be communicated to you as
efficiently as possible - at least via http://news.opensuse.org/

I saw that on the 14th. I thought it was already done.

There is some email traffic, but little. Dunno if it is just slack, some
type of holiday, too early, or broken :-p

Nothing on the news site that I can see.
Warning on the forum site. It does not say when they are going to do it,
it is 10:29 CEST here.

Hmm, I also saw it scheduled for 14th. I guess it quietly slipped.

hmmmm…maybe i was done on the 14th and i just saw it on the
16th…but, even if no one on the http side could bother to tell the
nntp’ers about the outage, you would think if it was done on the 14th
one of them would have seen the notice on the 15th, and removed it…huh?

It was originally scheduled for the 14th, but the person handling the
upgrade had a family emergency.

We didn’t announce it to the NNTP users since it wasn’t touching the NNTP
servers, but good point that it would be good to announce it here anyways.

Our system was one of the last to be upgraded, so by the time they got
here, the upgrade process was well practiced.

Well, we notice the lack of traffic or answers.

exactly…and, some might then waste their time making/sending an
outage report to admin@oS.org…maybe doing a traceroute/ping to send
with…

all because no one mentioned the planned downtime outside of
routinely un-visited web pages.

As I said, point taken. I’ll make sure we remember to notify you guys so
you don’t freak out when the traffic dips for an hour.
